Clam Canning Season Extended By Maine Official
Sea and Shore Fisheries Commissioner Arthur R. Greenleaf extended the clam canning season from May 15 to June 4 as an emergency measure. He said industry and armed forces demand justify the move, predicting higher than normal total pack while noting civilian supplies will remain tight. More than a dozen factories now produce daily as three month output climbs past 120 000 bushels, with last year digger payments totaling 390 419 dollars. The extension aims to protect young clams by closing flats to digging during the summer.
