Girl Prefers State Custody to Parents’ Care
Muriel Rand a 16 year old Richmond girl told Judge John J Keegan she would rather be under the State's care than with her parents amid a welfare hearing. Raymond Rand father of six faced two charges for willful cruelty and endangering health and morals with the other children left pending under parental supervision contingent on work and a teacher leaving the home. The girl's testimony followed an investigation by the State Department of Public Welfare and resulted in Muriel being committed as a State charge while the other five children stayed with their parents under specified conditions. Miniature Mauretania Built by a Former Resident
A Boston Herald memoir describes William W. Choate of Dresden who crafted a five foot long model Mauretania in Berkshire hills. With Horace E. Locke’s help he forged a detailed hull and rig from photos and diagrams, adding Circassian walnut fittings and electric lights. A shoreline staging area, a lighthouse named Pemaquid, and a launching cradle completed the scene as Choate awaited a Sunday launch amid winter blizzards.
