Three Missing Believed Drowned Off Georgetown
Three men from Bath and Arrowsic are feared drowned after their 13 foot boat capsized off Griffiths Head near Georgetown. Maurice Oliver Jr and Frederick Worth, both Park and Cemetery workers, and William Cotton of Arrowsic disappeared Friday as a heavy sea and winds battered the Sasanoa river area. Coast Guard teams searched the Kennebec and Sasanoa routes, learned a local lobster fisherman had recovered a similar overturned craft, and suspected the trio was swept into the river’s treacherous currents.
Dog Stars Shine at Bath Field Trials In 1949
The Sagadahoc Red Gun and Skeet association hosted a large Bath field dog trials weekend drawing competitors from New England. Nationally known handler Mike Seminatore from Woburn, Mass., steered seven winning dogs, including titles in open puppy derby and other events. Local winners Emery Freeman and William Mussenden claimed prizes in the Members Gun Dog stakes amid windy conditions and guiding 75 pheasants, with trophies and prizes awarded to top finishers.

Missing Bathmen Sought as Coast Guard Keeps Up Search
Coast Guardsmen scoured Sheepscot Bay and nearby rivers for Maurice E. Oliver Jr. 26 Fred D. Worth 27 and William E. Cotton 50 after they left Bath Friday in a 14 foot boat. The overturned boat with no motor was found in Sheepscot Bay Monday by a Five Islands fisherman. A clam hoe found at Beal's Island south end, identified as Oliver’s by his father, suggests the men may have gone ashore there Friday night. The search continues with Chief Boatswain's Mate Henry Leonard and Bath area guardsmen, plus relatives, despite low hopes for survival.

Rotary speaker discusses hospital crowding and aging population
Dr. Francis H. Sleeper, superintendent of Augusta State Hospital, told Bath Rotary Club how increasing longevity drives hospital crowding. He noted 2,800 patients between Augusta and Bangor, 97 percent of them male, with 330 employees and annual costs of 1 000 025 000 dollars. Sleeper, formerly Massachusetts assistant commissioner, praised Maine officials for cooperation and outlined staffing needs.
