Barton Morrison Dies a Hero in Italy Service
Barton C Morrison died April 16 1945 in Northern Italy after repeatedly crawling toward a wounded comrade under direct enemy fire. He was killed by an enemy sniper while aiding the injured man and was given a Christian burial with full military honors in an American cemetery in Northern Italy. His father Kenneth Morrison of Water Street received letters of sympathy from Army Chaplain Major Arthur R Osborne and from L H Cooper welding foreman at Bath Iron Works, praising Bart’s selfless sacrifice and jovial cooperation.

Early morning blaze on the third floor of 657 Washington Street in Bath killed Morey D. Smith 57 a Bath Iron Works fire patrolman and left Seth Snipe 35 with second degree burns. Edward M. Cummings 75, his wife Nina 57 and grandson Edward M. 11 plus four Bath Iron Works workers escaped. Fire fighters confined the flames to the upper floor as police aided victims. A special meeting of Mack Trucks Inc board was held in Bath at 11 am in the Bath Iron Works conference room on an invitation from William S Newell. After the meeting the directors toured the Bath yard and fabrication plant, dined at six, and stayed overnight at Hotel Eagle in Brunswick. They returned to Boston Friday for a three day birthday party hosted by Walter E Reid. Attendees included Louis G. Bissell and other top officers from New York and Boston firms.
