The Washington National Republican claims taxes and living costs surged after the Wayne Aldrich tariff repeal. It cites 170 percent bacon, 180 percent eggs, 200 percent oranges, 190 percent butter, 237 percent shipping, and other price jumps, concluding the democratic promise of relief proved hollow.
The piece discusses potential wage readjustments with cost of living, the need for fair pay for workers and profits for capital, and asserts wages won’t fall to past low levels. Mayor Drake and company officers face a hard question as the 3d Maine Infantry armory is deemed too small for drill work and storage. State armory official Albert J. Stearns has briefed the mayor, but no suitable quarters have been found to safely store records, property and equipment. Military leaders condemn the current space, yet a better alternative remains elusive.
Nearly every guest at the Old Folks Home joined the Mothers Day service at the Peoples church led by Rev. S A Evans. Automobiles provided transport, guests wore flowers honoring their mothers memory, and the event drew warm appreciation. Mrs Annie F Saunders returned from Rockland and Mrs Harriet Plummer Barnes visited Whitefield before attending the service.
A battery of six inch guns once sent to France is back and will be remounted at Fort Baldwin after ships and tackle from Portland are brought over. The guns arrived at Bath by rail then moved by scow to Popham and will be ferried to Fort Baldwin. The government wharf at Bath is unsafe, so the guns were landed at old Fort Popham.
Levi Thompson returned from Boston where he advanced the new hand tub into the New England Veteran Fireman's association and Pépdrts fiat. The tub passed the required form and a meeting is set for Wednesday night to elect company officers while the title will be given a tryout Friday night.
Wallace Atwood of Bath reported his Butek automobile stolen from in front of the Y M C A in Portland on Saturday. Police recovered the car on Federal street Sunday. the vehicle was in good condition aside from signs of hard driving. Nearby, many citizens visit Nequasset this week to observe the alewives run.
Bailey School of Industries closed Friday after 25 weeks of classes with total registrations reaching 642. The most popular courses were typewriting 108, stenography 78, mechanical drawing 72, ship drafting 58, mathematics 47, plan reading 45, and applied mechanics 35, among others. Many students left early or could not keep pace, while about 60 percent started at term’s dawn and up to 40 percent continued throughout the year. Some graduates secured positions at Bath Iron Works and Hyde Windlass Co., reflecting strong ties to local industry and ongoing support from The Texas Steamship Co. Mrs Frank W Biggins has returned home after spending several weeks at the home of Mrs M B Biggins in Arlington Massachusetts.
The Bath Bowling League season finishes with the Cubs atop at 725 percent, White Sox 625 percent, Bath Iron Works 225 percent. Fred J. McFadden leads individuals while Leighton and Mitchell post top single and three string totals. Cubs claim top team three string total. standings list numerous bowlers with scores 85 and above.
The Junior High parts list shows Edith Courier and Dorothy Sheldon top girls while Warren D Oliver and Marshall White lead boys. The winners include Thelma Rich and three sisters among persistent honorees with scores ranging from 96.8 to 90.23.
Sarah Helen Sprague 28 wife of Charles W Sprague died Sunday afternoon in Bath City Hospital after a long illness Born January 8 1896 to John E and the late Mary Tracy Schencks of Columbia Falls She and husband moved from Rockland to Bath in February living at 591 Middle Street Survived by her father and stepmother who accompanied the body to Rockland.
Funeral services for James Henry Day were held Sunday afternoon at his Arrowsic home with Rev. Samuel A. Evans of People’s Baptist Church of Bath officiating. Bearers included Arthur Hatch Clarence harleton M Colby and N Gratz Jackson. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Woolwich. John Hickel died Sunday at his home in Gardiner.
The Dromore Burying Ground association met at the Crosby Co. office on Monday afternoon to elect officers. Bessie Dickinson of Phippsburg was named president, Elwell Crosby of Bath treasurer, Mary P. Hall of Bath clerk, with J Edward Drake Charles V. Minott Hhwell Crosby Miss Bessie Dickinson Mrs. Alice Sawyer and W S Rogers as trustees. The treasurer reported all bills paid and a $66.65 balance in the perpetuity fund, aimed to grow for maintaining the old cemetery, whose oldest stones date to 1748.
Steamer Wiwurna of the Bath and Boothbay Harbor division will be brought to Bath promptly and readied for Commission early in June. Capt. Ross E. Dickson of Westport will command this year, with Horace Wylie as mate, Chester Andrews as engineer, and Snow B Orne as purser, bringing years of seafaring experience between Boston and New York.
Warren Oliver heads Wesley troop fund drive with 29 subscriptions totaling 3050 dollars. Oliver sold 12 bonds for 1600, Armes six for 350, Russell one for 500, Mitchell two for 100, Hall two for 150, Nea three for 200, Randall three for 150.
Gertrude T. Smith formerly of Dennysville and Theodore M. Demers formerly of Springfield wed Saturday night at the officiating clergyman Rev. E Hilton Post home. The tweeting service was used and the attendants were Mr. and Mrs. McMasters. The couple will reside in Bath.
The Riverside Cemetery association of Brunswick is incorporated with officers President Clarence E. Sawyer treasurer Horace D. Lovell and directors including Sawyer Lovell John L. Purington John E. Thompson A L Stimpson J A Beals and L Frances Jordan.
The Bath built battleship Georgia arrives at Boston today carrying troops from France. One of the oldest battleships in commission, she remains “fit as a fiddle,” reflecting the high regard for the Shipping City and Maine’s wartime naval work.
At Clarence M Fogg church parish meeting Monday night the pastor salary was increased by 100 dollars. James J Perkins received thanks for his service as the new reed in the coming year. Minutes reported 18 new members added last year with six deaths or dismissals. Treasurer Sidney Eaton presented receipts of 3316 88 and disbursements 3171 61 leaving 200 in reserve with bills paid. A notable gift for missions totaled 769 52 and subscriptions rose for current expenses and bequests. Officers elected included Rev Clarence M Fogg moderator Nellie Hunt clerk Sidney Eaton treasurer and others on the trustees and committees.
Mothers Day was observed at People's Church with guests from the Old Folks Home, the Old Ladies' Home, Home for Aged Couples, Old Men, and City Home. Automobiles provided, carnations given, Doxology changed to Praise God for Mother Home Bible and Country, Sunday school opening featured songs, and talks on the origin and purpose of Mothers Day.
Ernest Johnson, a janitor at Bath Iron Works, returned Monday from a brief fishing trip near the power vicinity. The report notes a modest catch and a calm outing, with no injuries or incidents recorded.
Clarence Parker a Bath native and former Morse High School star baseman, who played for Springfield last season batting 840, may return to managing a New England League team. He spoke at a Boston American House meeting about resuming his baseball career. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Walter O. Parker, formerly of Bath. His father runs a hardware store on Center Street and Parker is currently connected with a department store and as physical director of a night school. Capt. and Mrs. Ansel G. Marston remain in Portland Eye and Ear Infirmary for eye treatment after three months away from the Old Folks Home.
