Brownson’s Smile in Rio Harbor Blockade Clash

In January 1894 the Brazilian civil war neared a climax in Rio harbor as insurgent Admiral da Gama blockaded the port. Commander Brownson of the Detroit, aboard the San Francisco, is said to have smiled on taking position and again after signaling his guns. A tense standoff followed with insurgent ships and tugboats near Enobados island before Brownson warned Trajano and steered his squadron toward the docks, aiding the rebel cause and prompting the fleet to back down. The episode became a naval legend among American seafarers.
