Bath City Council Advances Land Deals and Civil Defense Plans
The Bath city council moved to discuss a lease for a barn on the Plummer Home property with a Bath firm and to seek the Board of Assessors aid in valuing property opposite the new junior high. An emergency $700 land purchase on Cottage Street would extend to Leeman Highway, pending terms with the current owner. The council also authorized a zoning plan contract with Warkentin Schroeter and heard petitions for new street lights, sidewalks, and sewers. Petty urged forming a local civil defense organization with a director, advisory council, and strong local backing, citing state law mandates and noncostly initial steps. A budget note showed a police, highway, and cemetery equipment balance of $1,751, proposing to buy a highway roller if suitable, otherwise awaiting funds. Court fee discussions noted officers are not paid for court time unless fines and costs are imposed, with witnesses possibly delaying regular work.
