Georgetown endures two serious fires in a week sparked by roadside matches. A noon Wednesday blaze threatened Nutter and Heald farms, destroying buildings and mill debris as winds shifted, then calmed by sunset. Town aid and neighboring help kept the spread in check, with several properties and timberland suffering losses totaling several thousand dollars.

Fire Rages Through Bowdoin Grass Land Threatening Homes
A grass fire on the Elwell farm started by a passerby lighting a pipe spread rapidly toward Edwin Jordan’s home. About 50 people joined the effort, Prof. Storer redirected Academy students, and after two hours the flames were subdued. Lumber losses were heavy, Jordan’s woodlot burned, Batchelder’s woodlot damaged, and a separate nearby blaze in Eliza Allen’s dooryard was quickly put out.

Georgetown Notes of Community Life and Local Talks
The town records express sympathy for Mrs. C W Oliver amid illness with doctors consulting in Bath. The Golden Rule Sabbath class donated thirteen dollars to the piano fund after a soap-order drive. Several residents, including Stearns Scott and John L Berry, visited family and friends, with Charles Russell in Portland and Mrs E B Hunt in Bath. Miss Harriet Oliver’s remains were brought from Augusta for Oak cemetery burial. A Union Hall dance was postponed due to Mrs Oliver’s illness. The Harringtons begin a fish weir near West Georgetown, drawing concerns about navigation and property on the east channel. The selectmen may be asked to assist in possible removal. Mrs Everett Jewatt returns from Auburn visit.
