The Bath city council approved the 1932-33 appropriation totaling 391192.11 dollars, 4419.13 less than the prior year, with debate over tax levels and school funding. Finance leaders urged higher taxes to cover floating debt while mayor and officials warned against overcuts and readjustments.
Stuart W. Webb, longtime Bath figure and husband of Marcia Sewall, was elected president of Pathe Exchange, Inc. He previously served as executive vice-president after succeeding E. B. Derr last year. Webb, a Harvard 1906 alum, built a career at Old Colony Trust, Bond & Goodwin, and Ford dealings, later leading Eastern Manufacturing and joining Pathe Exchange as director. During WWII he worked with the aircraft board and War Industries Board in New England.
Fred P. Ring of Brunswick remains in Cumberland county jail Portland on an indictment for the murder of William Philbrook of Brunswick last summer. He will be tried May 19 after being brought before Justice George L. Emery in the Superior court. Ring has been free on $20,000 bail since the fatal dispute over farm land. His case was set ahead due to injuries from an automobile crash.
A Bath Country Club public party is planned for today with no push to join. Tickets cost 1.25 for ladies to bridge or contract and for men to golf, plus a six o clock supper. Coffee by Charles Cahill and Carroll Watson assisting. Reservations with Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Sewall, Mrs. Hyde, Mrs. Smith, or Miss Kimball.
School children show strong interest in earning seven point star buttons from the Maine Public Health Association for meeting seven health criteria: vision hearing teeth throat weight posture and birth registration. Miss Abbie Buck of Augusta, supervisor of child health education, will visit local schools on Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs C W Rogers arrived in Bath Monday night by auto after spending the winter at West Palm Beach They left for home Tuesday May 3 and made stops at Jacksonville Charleston Washington Ardmore Pa Waterbury Conn before reaching Bath.
Eleanor Louise Sparks 23 formerly of Bath and Brunswick died after her car overturned near the Rye line in New Hampshire. Elsie Bennett is in serious condition at Portsmouth Hospital. William Uniacke, uninjured, drove the car. Sparks was a First National Bank employee from Brunswick.
Hon F W Carlton of Woolwich commends Bath Fire Department Chief Charles E Parks and Engine 4 for stopping a grass and oil tank fire near the Carlton barn. High winds and oil soaked ground threatened major damage. quick, coordinated action prevented disaster. The incident, possibly started by a discarded cigarette, drew praise from Woolwich citizens led by Carlton.
General regret is expressed over the dismissal of Edwin L. Emmons as tru ant officer. He has served the department for 30 years and is described as efficient and faithful. Pupils love him and he is praised for his patient conduct. Emmons expresses gratitude for kindness shown by teachers the principal and the Board of Education.
The State Commissioner warns Overseers of the Poor that merchants complain of unequal trade and high prices, prompting a plan to centralize state purchases with chain stores or municipal shops. Local boards must order state cases from chain stores and itemize bills, with strict limits and quarterly deadlines. payments require prior authorization and scrutiny to avoid excessive charges.
Engagement announced in Concord at the Bosley home. Elizabeth Brimmer de Vermandois Bosley, daughter of Emily Linzee Sohier Bosley, to William Brewster of Hartford, son of Rt. Rev. Benjamin Brewster. Both families noted for historic lineages.
A new nine hole course at Bath Country Club opened Friday morning with Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Given and Robert Brownell as first players. John H. Hyde scored 44 for nine holes, pro Bernard Hutchins followed with 41, and Mrs. Given posted 65 for 129 across 18 holes.

Recognition of valued service to Maine Sagadahoc and Cumberland counties for locating the new steel bridge over the Androscoggin between Brunswick and Topsham may name the Frank J. Wood Bridge Topsham Brunswick 1932. Memorial tablets of 18 by 20 inches would bear his name.
The Bath Country Club opened its new golf course with the first three players, Mr. Given, Mrs. Given, and Mr. Brownell, teeing off at 7:30 Friday. Mrs. Given led by driving from the number one tee, while Mr. Given posted 101 and Mr. Brownell 106 as they completed two rounds before business trips pulled them away.
The Bath Rotary Club hosted Morse High School graduating class members at Hotel Phoenix. Thirty three of thirty five attended as President Conti welcomed them and Newell Wilson spoke for the class. The group sang Morse High songs, enjoyed turkey, and Rotary songs were led by the Sheriff. Conti announced a June 7 Ladies' Night and a $5 gift for a flag for Bath Boy Scouts, with thanks read from Senior Commander Hill.
State budget officer William H. Deering says Maine is in better financial condition than any other state after an intensive study. The upcoming fiscal year will seek further economies to cover revenue losses, with possible salary cuts. legal constraints may limit savings to department credits. Maine faces about 117000 to save this year against a 700000 revenue shortfall, with over 600000 already saved through departmental cooperation. Mrs. E R Andrews hosted her contract club at luncheon on High Street.
