Bath friends attended the 40th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Grover at their Wiscasset home on Saturday April 24. They received a gift of a clock and a testimonial from friends. Mrs. Grace Cunningham of Bath sang and her daughter Mary danced. Guests included Nettie Clamstead, Leon and William Grover, Warren Grover, Hallie Simpson, C. F. Metcalf, and many Grover relatives.
The Colonial club schedules a May ball at the Masonic temple on Thursday eight p m and a June banquet at New Meadows Inn. Charged with the June event are Clinton D D Wilson Chester S Kingsley Ralph O Dale Dudley Leavitt and Frank H Turner. The group thanks the Y M C A for gym use and Grindell's Colonial club orchestra for Sunday April 18 music. George A Merritt becomes an active member while Robert F E Linekin and William A Verry shift to nonresident status.
Real estate transfers over the past two weeks are listed for Sagadahoc County towns including Bath, Phippsburg, Richmond, Topsham, and Woolwich. Notable changes show Anthony B. Coombs to Iva M. Coombs, Maine Savings Bank to People's Investment Association, and Florence G. Maxwell to Minnie B. Gallagher among others.
Rev Leslie Mann accepted a call to the Nazarene church to succeed Rev Charles O Miller. He arrived with Mrs Mann from Manchester where he preached the past two years. Born in Bangor, Mann has 15 years in Nazarene ministry and has served Livermore Falls Providence and Manchester. The New England district assembly in Wollaston, Massachusetts extended the call. Miller and his family moved to Manchester to locate.
Announcements received of the marriage on April 21 in Ster Mich between Kathryn Scert Williams formerly of Bath and Clifford Pronhor. The bride lived in Bath until completing the ninth grade and high school, works as a public accountant and stenographer, employed with Texas Steam Ship Co. plans for a motor trip through Kentucky follow two weeks away. Mr and Mrs Williams are away on a motor tour.
Roads south of Augusta and east of Lewiston and Auburn are settling and improving daily while frost clears elsewhere. Many routes are passable with rough sections noted from Portland to Kittery, Wells to Sanford, and Augusta to Belgrade Lakes. Several segments remain impassable or very bad, including areas around Belfast, Waterville, Strong, and Dover-Foxcroft, with snow and mud in several stretches.
The Junior League hospital benefit dance at Armory hall drew about 175 attendees, praised for decorations music and features. Grindell’s six piece orchestra performed under bright lights with a Charleston exhibition by Thomas Currier and performances by Bowdoin College quartet. A cake auction aided the hospital fund, with patrons and a list of sponsors and ushers facilitating the event.
Herbert W. Tucker chief of the Bureau of Animal Industry state department of agriculture lost memory of the collision at Walker's Corner Topsham. His auto struck a cart loaded with wood owned by Harland J. Kimball of Durham and rammed into a tree. Extensive repairs were needed on the Tucker vehicle.
The Metropolitan Opera in New York reports its best year in history fueled by American enthusiasm for native singers. The surge reflects strong popularity of domestic talent and growing public interest in homegrown opera.
Licensing board met Monday night at city hall and granted licenses to varied applicants for gasoline and petroleum sales, auto services, auctioneering, theatres, billiard rooms, bowling, auto sales, fireworks, junk peddling, second hand dealing, and peddling. Friends of Mrs. William T Wood of Dorchester Mass learned of her sudden death April 24 after a stroke the night before. A Portland native and daughter of Andrew Chase she lived 28 years in Dorchester and was a neighbor of Mr and Mrs Bred Rob Dean. Her husband William Wood of R T Stearns Co Boston and their son Gordon were with her in Bath at Jamesholm Jast Fall.
Mis Gertrude M. Coombs of Tort land and John B E Horne of Milton Mills were married Saturday at 9 30 am by Rev Edwin D Hardin. The couple went to the bride’s mother Mrs Alfred T Coombs for a wedding breakfast with relatives present. The bride wore rosewood crepe satin. The groom, son of the late John Horne, is in the clothing trade. The bride, a trained nurse from Trull hospital Biddeford, has practiced in Portland. They left for a wedding trip and will be at home in Milton Mills mid month.
Announcements report the April 12 marriage in Somerville Massachusetts of Miss Mertis Louise Tatz and James Dean of Arlington Heights Massachusetts. The double ring ceremony was at the First Methodist Church with Mrs Orrin Lutz hosting. The couple holds ties to Bath and Morse High School and the University of Maine respectively and will live in Arlington Treights Massachusetts. Additional items note changes at Webster House including ownership transfers and summer plans at Camp Pinehurst and Camp Dusty.
Richard F Swasey 28 died Saturday morning at City hospital after a weeklong illness. A Marblehead native born Sept 3 1898 he moved to Bath eight years ago and worked for the Cemetery and Park Board. Survived by wife and four children the funeral was held in Druid Park office building with Rev George W Sendder officiating. Burial in Oak Grove.
The funeral of Miss Carrie Marguerite Fullerton was Thursday afternoon at three at the home of her parents on Mechanic Street. Rev. Samuel A. Evans officiated. Bearers were her brothers Cecil Clarence and Eli hua Fullerton and Howard McNeil. Burial was in Oak Grove.
Funeral held Thursday afternoon at the home 5 Spring Street with Rev David L Wilson officiating. Bearers named Harry Safford Russell Colby Francis Duprey and Rasimond Small. Burial in Topsham family lot. Senator Smoot cited pessimism over loans Americans invest in Europe and warned they may not be repaid.
Amory McLellan Houghton died in Bath Monday afternoon after a lingering illness. Born October 11, 1859, in Bath, he was son of John Reed Houghton and Emma Patten McLellan. He helped run Houghton Bros shipbuilding, later led Houghton Tyres salt business, and owned part of the old Troughton shipyard. He was a lifelong Central Congregational church member, survived by wife, three children, and an uncle. Funeral Friday at 10:30 AM from his residence. private burial.
