First cod fishermen at City Landing arrive with tales
The first fleet docked at City Landing Monday to clean and pack cod for New York at eight to ten cents a pound, Maine markets two to three cents. Albert McLellan 300 pounds from Sheepscot Bay joins Boothbay Harbor sloop pilot Preston Lewis and Byron Campbell of Five Islands. Lewis tells a Boothbay Bank sloop tale of a jug handle found in a cod, the handle matching a jug from years at Boothbay customs. Campbell finds a stone in a cod’s stomach, ballast for a storm, tossed to the writer.
