Massachusetts safety chief Eugene McSweeney called for a national speed limit of 50 mph on open roads and 25 to 30 mph in towns. He spoke at the 19th annual Massachusetts Safety Conference and pledged stricter enforcement after a three year survey of accidents and causes.
A Portland company will acquire west Water street properties north of Center street to raze old shops including H. P. Mason & Son blacksmith and Newell W. Hall carriage shop. A modern filling station and auto salesrooms are planned, improving Bath’s main thoroughfare and potentially spurring further development.
A speaker urged lawmakers to pledge to repeal existing statutes rather than pass new ones. He cited the automobile title law and a recent ban on buying rubbing alcohol only from registered druggists as unusual. Critics say the rubbing alcohol rule mainly benefits druggists and doubt it will curb liquor use.
St Barnabas Guild for Nurses met at 1024 Washington Street with a brief business session led by Mrs. Charles M Tubbs. Mrs J R Andrews reviewed books including Grapes of Wrath Inside Asia and Marie Curie. Florence Goldsmith sang and sword dance by Mary MacMillan highlighted the program with prizes awarded in a Professor Quiz. Next meeting April 11 at Grace church parish house with moving pictures by Mr and Mrs George Baer Connard.
Charles Sewall spoke on Life in the North to the North End Community club during ladies night. Mrs. Carleton W. Andrews played piano as Miss Geraldine Nickerson sang two solos and Miss Bernadine Dow danced in costume. A turkey dinner fed 101 guests served by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Clark with Kennebec Greenhouses flowers.
Miss Margaret J. Melcher and Miss Alice N. Magoun, honorary members of Les Camarades Musicaux, attended a supper party hosted by the ladies of the club and Mrs. Fred D. Hill at Mrs. Fred H. Cary's East Brunswick home. Allan Ramsay read letters from national and state federation presidents praising the group's contribution to the Metropolitan Opera fund and its aim to bring Grand Opera to the people. After supper the group returned to Ramsay's home for rehearsal.
Pres Elmer W. Rogers announces the second annual banquet of the Firemen's Memorial Association to be held Wednesday evening the 27th at 7 o'clock at Hor Phoenix. Guests include Dr. David L. Wilson Rev Timulus C Munev Rev George B. Walsten solme and ex Chief Scott Morse of the Fire Department.

Wilbur C. Oliver reports repairs at 181 Center Street are finished and both apartments are let. He notes high demand for rents, saying he could have let the place many times over and has refused applicants, illustrating the market's hunger for satisfactory rents.
Frank Thompson, Stanley Prest, Nick Vamvyakias and Clarence Wagner, all of this city, returned Sunday from a three day motor trip to Canada. They left Friday, drove to Quebec, stayed a night at Montreal, halted in Three Rivers and returned via Derby Line.
The Hi Y club held a meeting last week after the business session. Members chose an educational program and approved forming basketball teams for out of town games this season. A Portland theatre party was planned with a YMCA swim, supper, and theater outing. Norman Mackinnon leads deposits.
M G Huber extension engineer led a Maine talk on Inside Improvements during an all day Nequasset Farm Bureau session at the Nequasset church. After slides he led a discussion, noon dinner was served by three ladies, and paints and finishes were covered in the afternoon. A vote designated a Farm and Home Week representative in Orono and April 3 will cover Short Cuts in Sewing.
The Morse high school auditorium hosted Spring Fever a three act comedy by the junior class Friday. Directed by Katherine Contey the show featured gifts to Miss Conley and a bouquet from the cast, with Pauline Nicker Sori presenting them. Cast members included Ernest Avery Donald Andrews David Teasdale and others.
Mayor elect Robert H Has Kell gave his first public remarks since March 4 as outgoing and incoming city council members and department heads gathered at the American Legion banquet Friday night. Retiring Mayor Arthur Sewall and former Mayor Donald N Small spoke, with Rev George B Wolstenholme presiding and a lobster salad supper served by the auxiliary of Roland Smith post.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces open competitive exams for vacancies in the Ord nance Service at Springfield Armory and Watertown Arsenal Massachusetts and in the Navy Department Naval Torpedo Station Newport Rhode Island. Salaries range from 1620 to 2600 a year for various Tool and Gauge Designer roles with deadlines set for June 28 or earlier if eligibles are filled. The Free Will Workers of Corliss Street church cleared about $20 from the annual Easter sale held Wednesday last week at Robert Mitchell's store on 42 Weeks Street. Mrs. James W. Gillespie and Mrs. Pred Coombs led cooked foods, Mrs. Edward R. McCabe ran the candy table, and Mrs. M. E. Watson with Mrs. William Hill oversaw aprons. No meeting will be held this week. The Knick Knack Klub met Wednesday last week with Mrs. Beatrice Thebeau on Court Street.
The annual Women’s Field Army drive of the American Society for the Control of Cancer begins April 1 in Bath with house to house and business district canvasses set for April 18. Enlistment is one dollar, with sword buttons and membership cards for donors, aiming to spread literature under the motto Fight Cancer With Knowledge.
Miss Iva Stewart daughter of Mr and Mrs Marple A Stewart of Bath is linked to Mona Gitterman in Hollywood gossip. Gitterman burned on set while filming Lillian Russell and Iva Stewart donated two blood transfusions. Fate then granted Iva the role Mona was to play Onlookers noted the emotional moment on set and radio reports.
Harold J. Rubin and Mrs. Rubin, Isidore Arik, and Miss Evelyn Petlock represent Bath B nai B rith lodge and auxiliary on the committee for the 88th annual District Grand Lodge No. 1 convention to be held in Boston from May 10 to May 13. Hotel Statler serves as convention headquarters with a large Bath delegation expected. The program will cover anti-defamation, defense, youth training, social services, Americanism, vocational guidance, hospitalization, old age homes, and refugee aid through symposia and forums.
The First Baptist church Co-Workers class met Wednesday at Mrs. Herbert E Worrey 1207 Washington Street. Three new members Mrs Guy Nichols Mrs Charles Armstrong and Mrs Alice Bickmore were admitted. Attendance was 29. Mark Doyle a local hog raiser plans to kill a 700 pound hog in a few days and wintered about 70 hogs.
Albert B Donworth of Houston wrote The Reason Why Columbus Sailed, published by Thomas Todd Co Boston. The book argues Columbus knew of Norse discovery in New England and explains why he sailed further south.
E Ashley Walter Jr, Grange insurance agent, spoke at Woolwich Grange on insurance options. More than 40 attended with visitors from Huntoon Hill Enterprise Boothbay and Winslow Mills. Invitations extended to Boothbay Grange. Winslow’s Mills Grange to visit. next week moving pictures of Wildlife Conservation to be shown.
Bath Girl Scout Council met at the commissioner's home to discuss an Indian pageant on April 20 in Portland City Hall, transport coordination for the conference, and a penny drive for suffering children. The drive runs April 22 30 with school involvement.
Colorado becomes the forty first state to sign forest fire protection pacts with the USDA. Seven states remain with limited or non federal forest land, while the federal share funds protection as state funds allow. In 1938 federal contributions reached about 2 million, with total state spending near 7 million.

Mrs. Alfred Simmonds of Waterville received word from a relative near London that English patients have used plane rides to treat whooping cough for years. The note, citing Mrs. William Stratford, said rarefied air therapies were as successful there as in the United States, contrasting earlier Dutch experiments known locally.

A large aerial model of the Passamaquoddy region covering 286 square miles is nearing completion and will be shown at Quoddy village within two weeks. The project demonstrates American youth capability and involved about thirteen trades. Hector N. Poirier supervised a selected group of high rating junior workers gaining experience as designers draftsmen shop men and machinists.
