A Maine reminiscence recalls a recent heavy snowstorm that dropped about fifteen inches on a level with drifts several feet high. The piece notes roads blocked for days, compares to the great 1888 blizzard, warns of spring floods, and ends with affection for life in the Old Pine Tree State.
Bath and its suburbs are praised for keeping main routes drivable during the Monday storm. Side streets and cross roads were also tended, with crews promising days more to restore full normal conditions.
The Dionne Quintuplets are to travel 180 miles to Toronto so the King and Queen of Britain may see them during their visit to Canada and the United States in June. Mayor Small notes the snow storm hit after the fiscal year end, leaving snow removal costs to the incoming administration.
The Maine Central Railroad will save 7000 dollars yearly as the Legislature mandates the Road pay 8000 dollars annually into the Carlton Bridge Act Account instead of 15000 dollars. Bath bus service provided splendid service Monday during the storm. In past storms the old trolley road would have had to halt operations and haul cars into the barn awaiting the snow to end.
The Bath Country Club plans a lively season with a big dance at the new State Armory on Patriots Day Eve. Weekly ladies golf or tennis afternoons with tea, several dances, an outdoor fete in August, and numerous tournaments are planned. Pro golfers including Jimmie Jones and local pros move venues, signaling strong golf club vitality statewide.
Cosmopolitan club Music Drama department outlined plans at a Wednesday meeting for a late April musicale featuring Stephen Foster music in costume. In charge are Mrs. Dennison Mrs. Irvine and Mrs. Lemont with dramatic committee members Mrs. Smith Churchill and Singer. A Barrie play may be read March 22 and a small admission will be charged. Mother’s Day tea music was rehearsed.
Fernald, Roland and Bertram Bailey and Bruce Dickson received third and fourth degrees last Wednesday at Woolwich grange. Sumner Bailey, oldest charter member, will be remembered with a group card. Harvest songs and tableaux followed a harvest supper hosted by Mrs. Bauer, Nelder, and Lawrence. Forty-nine Woolwich members attended along with guests from Dexter, Boothbay, Head of the Hill, West Bath, and Southport.
Acadia lodge of Knights of Pythias installed Thursday evening led by District Deputy Frank W Danforth with George O Melzard as grand master at arms and Harry H Watson as grand prelate. New officers include Russell L Kenney chancellor commander Harry B Williams vice chancellor Harry H Watson prelate Roland W Hanscom master of work Donald H Wilson keeper of records and seal George O Melzard master of finance Frank W Danforth master of exchequer Earl S Freeman master at arm Seth Stewart inner guard Joshua Tibbetts outer guard. A supper in banquet hall preceded the meeting.
At the Bath Iron Works Corp annual meeting in Bath several directors were re elected. William S Newell and Archibald M Main were named president and vice president respectively. L Eugene Thebeau became secretary and treasurer while Wadleigh B Drummond was chosen general counsel and clerk. The meeting included directors from Bath New York Portland Detroit and other locales.
Miss Alice Magoun and assisted guests entertained Les Camarades Musicaux at 1009 Middle Street last week. Mrs Carlton Rice presented a paper on Edward Elgar amid a program of piano duos solos and trios featuring many local musicians and several Albee pianists.
Morse high school hosts a Friday assembly debating whether the United States should ally with Great Britain. Afffirmative team members include Beulah Pratt Frances Hogan and Alfred Farrow while negative team lists Leah Merrill Earl Locke and Philip Chaney. Faculty coaches Hester Rose Katherine Conley. Debates lead to Bates College student Eugene Foster aiding. Morse plans to send teams to Lincoln Academy Newcastle on March 24 and to meet Rockland high here.
The Memorial Hospital trustees, at a Wednesday meeting, authorized borrowing 3000 to cover outstanding bills and thanked the Junior Hospital League for furnishings for the new reception room. Vice President Crosman presided in Sewall's absence amid a State House hearing.
The Maine Federation of Women's Clubs will hold its annual meeting at Rangeley Lakes Hotel on June 21 to 23 with officer elections. Incumbent officers face potential challengers for second vice president, secretary, and treasurer, while first vice president and president appear likely to remain unopposed. Candidates include Mrs. Leroy R. Folsom of Norridgewock and Mrs. Jerome Knowles Jr. of Northeast Harbor. Mrs. George L. Higgins of Bangor seeks recording secretary for the Nineteenth Century club and Bangor Federation ties, while Mrs. Higgins and her husband are noted as residents of suburban Bangor with five children.
J Parker Morse of Phippsburg was honored with a surprise party at the Winneganee Community Club house on his 76th birthday. Family hosted a decorated event with a cake, dinner of chicken pies, vegetables, rolls, ice cream, and coffee, followed by music, games, and dancing. Relatives present included Morse family members from Topsham and nearby towns.
Rev. Joseph O. Purdue continued his Lenten talks on Modern Saints during a Winter Street Ladies Aid meeting. He spoke on Sadhu Sundar Singh of India. Hostesses included Mrs. Edward B. Smith and others. Miss Alice Varney presided in the president’s absence. Next meeting will feature James A. K. Aggrey of India on March 17.
Battery H of the 240th Coast Artillery Corps will officially dedicate its new armory with a military ball planned for early April. A Sunday informal opening will allow the public to inspect the building, with hopes that Governor Barrows and Adjutant General Hanson attend. Doc Harmon's dance band from Portland is tentatively engaged.

Mr and Mrs Claude B Dyer of West Somerville Massachusetts spend three weeks in Bath with Mrs Dyer s sister Mrs Fenton I Moore of Cherry Street before returning home they plan to visit Mr and Mrs James Dyer in Camden to see his parents during the trip
Archibald M. Main, vice president of Bath Iron Works, spoke at a rural Church Men's club meeting about last summer's voyage to Europe aboard the Queen Mary. He recounted visits to London, Scotland, and the Empire Exposition in Glasgow, plus engineering congresses, shipyards, and meetings with officials, ending with remarks on France and Belgium.
Miss Ethel Seavey celebrated a surprise miscellaneous shower at her parents home 502 High street Bath with the Girls' club of People's Baptist church present. Gifts included silver cut glass linen and spun aluminum. An orchestra played as ice cream and cake were served. Attendees included Rev George B Wolstenholme Mrs Nina McRae Mr and Mrs Milan Leonard and many Bath and Lisbon residents.
The Nightingale club raised money from a January tea by Mrs. Arthur L. Pratt to furnish the new recovery room at Memorial hospital. The event, only the club’s second of its kind, drew enthusiastic support and monthly meetings include sewing for the hospital. The next gathering will be hosted by Mrs. John H Freeman in Snow Park.
Miss Iva Stewart Bath’s moviedom figure shares a simple cookie recipe in Movie Mirror as described by Miss Ann Lywood. The method uses sweetened condensed milk coconut and white bread. dipped slices are coated, rolled in coconut, then baked at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes until browned.
Garden Book Week is observed at Patten Free Library with garden books flower magazines and seed catalogues on display. The Kennebec Greenhouses sent annuals and seeds attracting attention as patrons request reservations after Saturday. The library offers special services to specialists earning hearty commendation.
Police reported two minor automobile accidents linked to Friday’s storm. At 5 45 p m a collision occurred at Broad street and Commercial when Lewis B Swett’s coupe failed to climb a incline and hit Marion D Harmon’s sedan. Swett’s car was undamaged while Harmon's suffered a dented right front fender. A second crash at 5 30 p m involved Ralph Legard’s taxi and Phillip Wallace’s car converging on South and Washington streets, with damage to left front fenders on both vehicles.
Mrs Charles Cooke and her son Randall visited sister Mrs Edward Cook on Willow Street in Portland before returning home.
The Navy pushes a civilian training plan like the Army program to educate youths in naval basics and provide a trained reserve. The two track system would enroll high school age boys for enlisted duties and college students for officer training, with 45 days at Newport Norfolk Great Lakes or San Diego.
Bath Iron Works Corp draughtsmen will vote at their April meeting on affiliating with the National Council of Marine Draughtsmen following a Banquet and meeting at Hotel Phoenix last Tuesday. E E Benzenberg and J L Bates Jr of the National Council spoke to about 30 Bath Marine Draughtsmen.
Mrs. Fred S. Curtis hosted the Twin B's club of Bath and Brunswick at 38 Pleasant Street Thursday evening. After the business meeting three new members were initiated. A social hour followed with games, sandwiches, cake, coffee, nuts and mints. Twenty one attended. The next meeting is set for Brunswick on April 13.
Tentative poultry meeting dates for March have been revised with two sessions scheduled. On Tuesday March 14 in Turner and Thursday March 16 in West Bath meetings begin at 10.30 am, followed by manure conservation meetings in the afternoon.

Herman Gowell of Bath was pleasantly surprised last Wednesday when his family presented him with a birthday cake. A skilled joiner who has not missed a day’s work since moving to Bath at age 30, Gowell retires about seven and rises at daybreak. Known as "Pop" to his many Bath friends, he receives congratulations on his birthday.
Mrs R Clinton McFadden entertained St Barnabas Guild for Nurses on Thursday at her home 658 Washington Street. Miss Stella A Dolloff presided in president’s absence. Games were played and Madam Zazu of Egypt told fortunes. Refreshments were served. next meeting April 13 will be amateur night with Mrs William Blair in charge.
Ellery T. Ricker presided as principal as certificates were issued Thursday evening to those who satisfactorily completed courses during the twenty fifth Bangor Free Evening school season. Nearly 450 enrolled this season, including 167 men and 280 women, with an average nightly attendance of 253.
