City orders closing of present city dump within 30 days

City government orders the current North Street extension dump closed within 30 days. The move follows a sanitation report on incinerator bids, with the panel rejecting all bids and seeking lower alternatives and plant inspections before deciding.

Sagadahoc Council Plans St Patrick's Day Celebration

A Sagadahoc Knights of Columbus meeting announced a St Patrick's Day celebration at K of C hall Saturday at eight. Knights and their guests are invited to a box lunch social and auction followed by entertainment for Founders Week with piano and tenor solos and surprise numbers. Admission requires a lunch for two.

Fire damages Mikelsky block in Bath. thousands lost

Fire swept the rear of the Mikelsky block at 148 Front Street early Tuesday, threatening a major conflagration. Navy men alerted authorities. Bath fire department battled dense smoke and flames, limiting damage to stock and delaying spread to Joan's women's store and the Smoke Shop. Insurance expected to cover building and furniture losses.

Milford Funeral Attended by Kronstrand Burgess in Boston

Mr and Mrs Carl Kronstrand and Mrs Katherine Burgess went to Boston on Tuesday for funeral services for Cyrus Milford of Quincy Point Massachusetts. His wife formerly Miss na Pinrall of Bathy been a frequent visitor here until his health prevented it. Milford died after recent surgery.

All Day Meeting of D A R Aids Bath Red Cross

Colonel Dummer Sewall chapter D A R held an all day session at Central church parish house with about 40 members and guests. The group sewed for infants, enjoyed a chicken pie luncheon, and heard Miss Millicent Hecht speak as representative to the Good Citizenship Contest. Beatrice DeCostas discussed Red Cross work in China and India, with others sharing lore of Robert Wylie and Martha Pioneer on the Maine coast.

Metropolitan Opera tenor Donald Dame attended the launching Sunday at Bath Iron Works of the destroyer USS Hanson as a guest of General Manager G Baer Connard. The Bath event followed his Bath appearance at Morse High School Auditorium as the final number in the 1944 45 Community Concerts Association presentations.

Fourth destroyer Hanson launched at Bath yard

The U S Hanson, fourth destroyer of 1944 from Bath Iron Works, was launched Sunday at 11 30 in Bath. Sponsored by Mrs. Harry A Hanson, the vessel honors First Lieutenant Robert Murray Hanson USMCR of Newtonville Mass killed in action Feb 3 1944. The event drew numerous naval officials and relatives including Rear Admirals Gygax Read and Gillette, ex governor Baxter, and family members.

Six Bath Iron Works workers hurt in two-bus crash

Two Bath area buses carrying Bath Iron Works employees from Wayne Monmouth Sabattus and Lewiston collided near the Brunswick West Bath line. Six were hospitalized with cuts bruises and possible fractures while others treated at the scene returned to work.
