Popham Beach Storm Destroys Cottages and Stores
Widespread damage from a historic storm along Popham Beach left eight cottages and Fred Spinney’s general store wrecked or severely damaged. The Briggs and Gordon cottages disappeared except for a garage and a three story ell, buried by sand. Waves toppled the Seaside Store, lifted porches, and flooded the shore with debris, while roadways and the Kennebec mouth area faced heavy erosion. The storm peaked early Monday, with seas ripping moorings and damaging the town’s bell tower staging.
