Morse high school wins a cup for the interschool debating league, with a triple tie among Morse Brunswick Bath and South Portland schools on February 16. The college later states no championship can be awarded but each winning team receives a suitably inscribed small cup.
At the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Tedford the ninth birthday party for Marguerite Wallace was celebrated with games a peanut hunt prize to Russell Merchant and second to Leonard Tedford. Guests included Elizabeth McGrath Ruth Fullerton John Bert Phyllis Bishop Jean Mayo and others.
The Beacon Street church Ladies' Aid held a social at the home of Mrs. Fred Willis, 12 Park Street. The dining room featured flags and a cherry tree centerpiece with the axe associated with George Washington. Oyster stew and Washington pies were served by hostess and club president Mrs. Adams. Messages from absent members due to bad weather were read aloud.
Mrs. Addie Burdin, elected ward clerk in Ward 7 at the first municipal election and the city’s only woman ward officer, informs City Clerk Grassy she will not report for duty at the upcoming election after moving to Kennebunk last January.
Charles A. Bruce came back to Belfast Monday after a week with Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Wright on Merrihall Avenue. He recovered the lost suitcase en route to Bath and returned the one he took by mistake at Waterville depot with apologies.
The Universalist Church hosts a Lent series from March 5 to April 16 with Dr. Gray delivering morning sermons on What Is the Church For. Evening services at 7 15 feature community singing and a series of Lent talks on essential Christian doctrines including Oh Our Father Man Our Brother Christ Our Saviour Life Our Discipline Heaven Our Home. On April 9 the Passion Play of Oberammergan is shown.
Mrs. Roscoe P. McFadden and Mrs. Fred Patton hosted a lunch for the Winter Street church Ladies Aid on Friday. The all day session ran from ten to 4:30 with luncheon at 12:30. Menu included fish chowder Waldorf salad rolls crackers pickles pies cream cakes Candies tea and coffee. Decorations featured sweetpeas and smilax. Some members joined for part of the day and sewing for an Easter sale proceeded with fine work.
Mrs Margaret Cantwell from the leather goods department of Loring Short and Hammon Portia was a weekend guest of Mr and Mrs Harry M Adams at Snow Park.
Joshua F Upton 71 died at his home in the Winnegenee district Phippsburg after a period of illness pneumonia. He was born in Bath son of Elijah Upton educated in Bath and for years helped publish The Times and The American Sentinel. He founded The Bath Enterprise in 1889 later merged with The Bath Independent. He promoted Enterprise farm purchases in Phippsburg and owned several farms. He served in the Grange Maine Press Association and as town official in Phippsburg. He leaves a daughter Mrs Fred A Oliver a son Edwin Upton a Brunswick brother Henry C Upton and two sisters. He was active in Masons Solar lodge and valued by friends and workers.
Leander M. Small of Bowdoinham Ridge died suddenly on Friday after working outdoors. He served for years on the board of selectmen. He is survived by his wife, his 98 year old mother, four children Vivian Roy Ralph and Margaret, a sister Mrs Wilson and a brother Frank.
Lizzie Brown widow of Benjamin F Brown died Saturday noon at 12 Pearl Street after years of valvular heart trouble and rheumatism. She leaves daughters Ada Marston of Bath and Harriet Fisher of Moore's Mill New York, son Edwin Brown of Bath, and four grandsons. Funeral Tuesday at two at the residence.
Sewall Groves, the town’s oldest resident and longtime ship carpenter born August 2 1888 in Wiscasset, died of pneumonia February 22 after a sudden illness. He lived in Wiscasset most of his life and spent winters in the South cutting live oak for ship frames. He is survived by his widow with funeral services held Friday at St Phillips Church.
In the Eagles weekly whist night Mrs May Ward and Charles Green won first prizes with Sto Ida Ganvin and John LeClair as consolation. Twelve tables and Perkins orchestra provided music. At Pine Tree circle in G A R Mrs John Costain and William Curran Jr won first prizes with Mrs Perry Colby and George Jolson as consolation. Large attendance and a second party planned in two weeks led by committee Lilian Taft and Julia Martin.
The ENTIRE FAMILY III of J. H. Chatman at 580 Middle Street are sick with flu or pneumonia. Mr Chatman is hospitalized at City hospital and one member of the family is convalescent at present.
Morse High plans to enter Bates basketball tournament March 10 and 11. Morse may be selected as one of eight Maine teams to compete, with preliminaries 15 minute halves and finals 20 minute halves. South Portland game on March 3 could seal a spot. winner earns a silver cup. Registration is $2 per team.
The Beacon Brotherhood met Friday at Rufus D. Moulton’s Dlummond street home. Rev J. Roy Browne presided as Sanford Nickerson’s resignation as president was accepted and George R. Perry was elected for the year. A social hour followed with ghost and Negro story readings by J. Mayo and P Worrey. Refreshments were served by Mrs. R D Moulton and Mrs. Parker Moulton with several special guests present.

A 40 foot motor craft seized in Salem Harbor last week carried 700 cakes of Genoa tobacco and was operated as a packet on the Newburyport and Portland route. Captain of the Wilkins charged with smuggling appeared in Boston, pleaded not guilty, and posted $10,000 bond later reduced to $5,000 posted by Morris Shapiro.
At a Bath meeting held at Alvah A. Morse’s home planners discussed rooms for the association’s headquarters. The group voted to accept occupancy with Acadia lodge K P and arranged to install ECC. Morse and Firn ard inspected the space, deeming it suitable for radio work with roof poles planned if secured. A YMCA meeting is set for Tuesday night.
Corliss street church Philathea class entertained girl friends with a Washington's Birthday program. The event featured songs by Eula Fielding and Eula Wright, a recitation on The Making of the Flag, and a Washington themed song. Games followed with refreshments of Washington pie, sandwiches, and coffee.
Directors plan the annual supper for March 15 the same night as the annual meeting. Miss Jane Goodman will prepare the annual report. Mrs Morrell Hamlin of Portland is chosen to give four lectures on current events beginning next Saturday afternoon. Pickets may be secured at the club house.
Adelaide Augusta Rice wife of George I Rice of Woolwich died recently. Her funeral was Friday afternoon from the Woolwich homestead with services by Rev J L West of People's Baptist church. Four of her brothers served as bearers.
James R. McKay receives word from son C R McKay director at Beaman Organ Co that a new organ is shipped to Gardiner for the Methodist Church and asks James to oversee the installation. The Bath resident, retired after a long organ career, plans to return for the project and see if new organ innovations exist.
