Morse High School awarded diplomas to 79 seniors in a wartime graduation ceremony led by Albert S. Noyes of Education. Seventeen seniors had military or other exceptional circumstances. valedictorian Martha Evelyn Leeman and salutatorian Jean Leslie Gowdey led the class in a program reflecting postwar themes.
The Independent Brotherhood of Shipyard Workers won the Bath Iron Works consent election by 5 to 2. Final counts show 7 536 valid votes from about 8 627 eligible. CIO’s LUMSWA received 2 111, AF of L 294, and no union 59. The tally confirms a decisive union defeat for the CIO after four ballots since 1938.
Two Bath men Sgt Joseph Pinkham and Cpl Kenneth Baker met in a small English town on May 31 for the first time since enlistment. Their wives, sisters, reside with their father Roy Henderson at 832 Middle Street. Baker served a year and a half with the army field artillery, leaving the country in April, a week before Pinkham, shipped in.
The Fifty Year Class of the Bath Alumni Association held a Wednesday reunion at Sedgwick with a chicken dinner. Eight classmates from the class of 1894 attended plus two husbands, and guests from Rochester New Hampshire and nearby towns. A festive evening featured class history readings, photos, and memories, with attendees noting the absence of Mrs. Hugo Baecker due to illness.
A community block dance for teens and the public set Friday from 8 30 to 11 30 on Washington Street beside the park. The event opens a Summer program by the Youth Recreation Council and the USO Young People's Committee with free admission, dances both modern and square, and lighting and refreshments arranged. The class of 1944 marked commencement with a Friday evening senior reception in the Morse High School gym from eight to twelve. Red white and blue streamers and a class service flag decorated the gym while the audience enjoyed Bobby Jordan's orchestra. The procession featured a grand march led by class officers with Miss Marguerite Rines as president and a large receiving line of faculty and officials including Superintendent Ladd and Mayor Rogers.
Donald McRae of Woolwich suffered facial cuts requiring a physician at police headquarters after a Plymouth coupe driven by Rosario Daigle of West Bath crashed into a Lincoln Street banking near Academy. Daigle faces driving under the influence charges, with Morris Knights also ordered to appear on a driving count for hitting a parked car on High Street.
Bath Lions Club held its fourth annual Charter Night with banquet and dance at the Sedgwick. Edwin R. Andrews became president, with a full slate of officers installed and tributes paid to retiring King Lion Albert S. Noyes. Past District Governor Arthur Hinman attended as a guest and urged club participation as the group plans continued service.
A group of Brunswick Naval Air Station Ships Service employees held a surprise party at Miss Priscilla Gott’s home in Brunswick for Miss Arlene Leighton. She will marry Pvt Raymond Baker USMC at the new airport chapel at 7 30 PM on June 30. Guests included Priscilla Gott Shirley Connolly Terry Bailey Erma Hatch Lucia Ploude Gladys Higgins Betty Cooper Dora Whitten and other friends.
In Bath Horace A. Hildreth won the Republican governor nomination with 528 votes, ahead of Roy L. Fernald. Ward outcomes favored Fernald in Ward One and Six, Hildreth in five other wards. Robert Hale led for Representative to Congress with 823 votes. Pettis had 76. Bath totals reflect a light primary turnout, the lightest since the system began.
In Bath on Monday’s primary, Forrest C. Legard narrowly beat George A. Baker for Representative to the Legislature, with Miss Elizabeth Deering leading the field. Legard carried wards one through five, totaling 555 votes to Baker’s 510, and Deering led overall with 580 votes. State Senator Neil S. Bishop widened his Bath lead over Raymond M. McIntire, winning all towns except Phippsburg, including a 114 to 16 margin in Bowdoinham. Williams defeated Nowell in Topsham among classed towns, while A. Hildreth led Roy L. Fernald in county results. Hale swept Congress race in First District with 1464 votes.
