Local farmers report heavy rain and cold soils delaying planting and maturing of crops. Beets and peas show potential, with peas possibly ready for market by July 4, though overall supply may be less plentiful than average due to late planting and cooler June temperatures.
Gov Paul A Dever signed a law increasing the legal lobster size to ensure fillets weigh at least one pound or more. All lobsters caught in state waters or from outside must measure three and three sixteenths inches from eye socket to shell to protect spawning and boost the lobster industry. Francis W Sargent said small lobsters were unprofitable but industry backed the change for a larger catch.
Richard D Cushman manager of Sebasco Lodge and Cushman’s Beach offers the Bath Y M C A access to Cushman’s Beach for weekly swimming classes for young boys. The facility, though mainly for Sebasco guests, benefits the community with this public service.
Do not park too close to intersections and leave space so a driver approaching can see what may be coming around the corner. Narrow escapes from accidents happen daily at street intersections if drivers do not watch and give others a chance to see when turning.
In the national capital a prominent speaker argues against boosting northeast production due to risk of foreign attack. Many believe the impact would hit major cities and key wartime manufacturing centers harder than the northeast itself.
Local fishermen in Bath faced four days of meager returns as river and inshore waters yielded few fish. Despite reports of plentiful salmon and sturgeon, only a couple of two and a half pound fish, some flounder, and a few bass were landed. No fish were entered in the Bath Chamber of Commerce derby.
DeMolay Commandery Knights Templar arrange a St John Day event in Skowhegan featuring a 10 a.m. parade, lobster lunch at Lakewood, a matinee by Lakewood Players, golf and tennis, with box lunch to close. Thirteen statewide commanderies invited including Dunlap No 5.

A closing picnic was held Wednesday from 10 30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Assistants included Mrs. Louis MacDonald Mrs. Vinal King and Mrs. Olive Scamman.

Dr and Mrs Kendig Cully and daughters Melissa and Patience of Haverhill Massachusetts were weekend guests of Rev and Mrs Richard J Schaper at 890 Washington Street.

Speed and improper actions drive fatalities with seven total in May, liquor linked in three cases, rural areas bear most deaths, urban deaths 13. Personal injury up to 519, property damage 1,180. parents and adults urged to reduce risks during summer traffic.
Mrs. Jean Jackins will teach arts and crafts at the Summer playground season announced by Edward J. McMann director of recreation. Groundsgodds Hyde Park Huse Lambert Dike schools Goddards will operate starting June 26 for the 11th year.
Donald LeClair of Portland paid 14.70 after pleading guilty to digging bloodworms in Georgetown without a town license. William G. Arnold of Portland was found guilty for failing to stop at a stop sign and fined 12.70. Floyd Raven of Bath paid 9.70 for overtime parking. A Bath juvenile paid 25 in court costs for a hill crest driving incident. A Woolwich juvenile received a year’s probation after pleading guilty to breaking and entering and larceny of watches and jewelry from a cottage.
An out of state beach wagon drove through the business district Monday evening. The door bore a uniquely conspicuous name that drew attention as residents noted it could stand as a memorable moniker until something better comes along.
Mrs Walter Keyes and her daughter Helen, who spend winters in Portland, have relocated to a cottage in West Point. The move places the family at a new coastal residence during the season.
Cpl. John R. Quinn Jr arrives in Bath after ten months in Korea with the 2nd Tank Company 28th Infantry. He will report to Fort Devens after a 30 day furlough. Other local service members rotated home or sent to training include Cpl. Pelham E Howe moved from Lackland AFB Texas to Scott AFB Belleville Illinois for a 30 week radio school course beginning daily at 6 pm through midnight He is a 1950 Morse High School graduate who enlisted in January and has not yet visited home His parents Mr and Mrs Melvin W Howe of River Road Woolwich plan to visit him once travel permits allow
The District Four convention met at Lowell temple with a 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. session led by District Deputy Mrs. Minerva Pratt of Freeport and a supper prepared by a committee. The evening program opened with Most Excellent Chief Susie Darrah as officers from five temples filled chairs and several district deputies were introduced. Temples from multiple towns attended and degrees were conferred by the Victory Temple staff. Hazel Dean and Edith Lufkin spoke for district deputies and grand officers respectively.
William U. Niss retires as skipper of Sea Scout Ship SSS Barracuda after four years. Robert E. Baker, 24, named as successor, is an engineering assistant at Hyde Windlass Co. Niss remains Ship Committee Advisor for Bath Lions Club.
Miss Duveen Ruth Bryant daughter of Mr and Mrs Harding P Bryant 17 Denny Road was elected to the English position at N H Fay High School. She will teach two divisions of English I and II and a remedial class. A Morse High School Bath graduate she majored in English at the University of Maine and will graduate this year with 42 credits and receive a Bachelor of Arts degree and Maine teaching certificate. Her duties at N H Fay include basketball dramatics and other activities.
Winnegance baseball won both games against Sebasco in a Sunday doubleheader at Morse's field. The opening game stretched to 10 innings before the victory was secured for the Winnegance team. Sebasco plans a return set of games this Sunday at Morse's field.

Two winners advance to the Fifth International Model Plane Contest in Detroit Aug 22 27 with all expenses paid. Entrants grouped by Juniors 15 and under Seniors 16 to 20 Open 21 plus. Dealers from Augusta Bath Auburn Boothbay Rockland Rockport Waldoboro Waterville Skowhegan Livermore Falls North Jay Rumford sponsor prizes and trophies.
Ronald Metigier 30 and Anthony Gagne 27 of Brunswick were shaken after their truck left Route One near Westport island bridge. Metigier was treated at Bath Memorial for hip pain, while Gagne was discharged after head cuts. Berge Bros. of East Brunswick owned the vehicle.
The Dunlap Commandery of Bath will attend the St John Observance in Skowhegan and Lakewood on Saturday June 23. A parade starts in Skowhegan at 10 a.m. followed by a lobster dinner at Lakewood, a matinee by Lakewood players at 2.30, and a buffet lunch at 4.30. Attendees should contact Past Commanders Carl E. Albee and Charles Bartlett or Sir Knight Robert Mosher.
Bath Rotarians travel to Damariscotta Tuesday evening to assist local Rotarians and Newcastle in observing Ladies' Night at the County Fair restaurant. John Gould of Lisbon Falls, a noted poet and author, will be the guest speaker, promising Yankee wit and laughs.

Loretta won high score in county dairy foods demonstration at Lewiston. Albert White and Robert Belanger demonstrated soil conservation and will compete June 19. A rummage and candy sale is planned for next Saturday to fund travel to 4-H Day at the University of Maine June 23. The club’s June schedule includes June 16 sale, June 19 dairy foods and soil conservation, June 23 4-H day, and June 30 dairy show at Lewiston Fairgrounds, with next meeting July 7 at Littlefield school.

Roger Carrot Ketchum son of Mr and Mrs John Ketchum has enlisted in the United States Navy and left Friday for the Naval Training base at Newport Rhode Island He is an honor student from Morse Class of 1951 and was a National Honor Society member and basketball team manager.
Small schools of herring have been reported in Winneganee bay in recent days. Dogfish inhabit the bay and one fisherman at Brigham's cove caught a three foot specimen of the miniature sharks last week.
