The Soviet press attacks United States capitalism, blaming Wall Street for democratic failures under communism. It argues stock markets empower ordinary investors, with millions participating and strict rules protecting against fraud, while warning against excessive capitalist influence.
The plan to supply $2 billion in federal aid to schools over four years drew criticism from Senator Knowland. He warned that Washington never ends programs after four years and that federal money always comes with control. He argued the proposal risks federal overreach.
More than 150 patrol members attended the annual outing at Thomas Point with large quantities of food and drinks. Contests awarded cash prizes to top finishers in events for girls and boys across multiple age groups, with many named winners listed in order of finish. Horace E. Pinkham of Saco pleads guilty to cheating by false pretenses after a burglary at Walter Snip’s general store in Pappsburg Center. Justice Abraham Rudman filed the charge. Pinkham has made restitution. Indictment came after a grand jury ado.
Grace Valentine spent Sunday with Evelyn Lindsay in Smithfield New Hampshire. George Hackett and Linwood Hackett were guests of Lawrence Hackett in Hampton New Hampshire. Clara Temple of Topsham visited her son Fred Temple and family. Vera Heath plans a Saturday departure to Fort Belvoir Virginia to reunite with daughter Mabel Heenie and family. The Hackett and Heenie groups plus Carl Heenie returned from a Nova Scotia trip.
Mrs Ruth Russell married George B Trask in Hyde Park at Wesley Methodist Church Rev Dr Oliver W Bell officiated Esther Russell served as maid of honor and Peter Sanford was best man. The couple resides at 26 Central Avenue Hyde Park.
Rev Warren Harris preached on Philip and the Eunuch at First Baptist Church. Various community items follow including choir rehearsal at the church, Working League and 4-H club activities, library hours starting June 28, Open House Day at Reid Park, and numerous family visits, travel, and social gatherings across Robinhood Georgetown Center Kennebec Point and surrounding towns.
A Maine group including Governor’s Council member Robert Travis and Col. Theodore Lewin toured the SAGE air defense facility in Syracuse. They observed fighter aircraft and radar systems, met Maj. Harry Murphy, and learned about efforts to protect the nation from a surprise air attack. The C47 flight returned to Portland then Augusta.
Funeral service for Miss Carolyn D Hall was held Thursday at two from A F Mayo Son Funeral Residence. Rev Martin B Sargent of Winter Street Congregational Church officiated. Bearers included G Thomas Murphy Earl Farnham Clarence Reed Jr and Ralph Philbrick. Burial followed in Oak Grove family lot.
Local church activity includes a Ladies Night at Bowdoinham Baptist Asociation with a large crowd and supper by the Good Neighbor club. Harbor life and Reid State Park draw crowds as temperatures rise to the high eighties. A power outage occurred last Thursday after a cable pole broke from a nearby auto accident on Arrowsh Drive. Numerous local residents and visitors spend the summer at cottages and summer homes across Bowdoinham area, with church members attending nearby Baptist services and hosting guests from Bath and Yarmouth.
Clinton and Bruce, her sisters. Fay Hanna of Augusta and Miss Betsy Hanna of Belgrade visited local relatives Sunday. Mrs. Walter Houghton of Robinhood recently stayed with sister Madge O'Brien and traveled to Hallowell to see John and Mrs. Carey. Mrs. Arthur Baird and friends from Hartland were guests of Madge O'Brien. Sunday visitors to Mr and Mrs Lester Davis included their son Arthur and his wife, plus their grandson and family of North Anson.
Mrs Gladyce Cothran of Bath died Thursday night. Mrs Rose Lee Higgins and Mrs Carrie French accompanied by daughters visited and stayed with Bath residents. Families including the Haines, Pearson, and Lloyds were seen visiting in Bath Sebago and Waterville areas. Infant Margaret Elizabeth Berry returned home from Bath Memorial Hospital after birth on June 8.
Bay Point residents Mr and Mrs Alton Stinson and family visited Mrs Stinsons parents Mr and Mrs Emery Rideout in East Brunswick on Sunday. Errol Pinkham and son Errol Jr of Hartford Connecticut also called on their grandparents. Wanda Pinkham of Bath and Barbara and Emery Rideout of Bath called on the Rideouts and Ada Blaisdells parents in Bath.
Funeral service for Miss Grace Cornelia Baker was held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Curtis funeral home with Rev. Charles R. Sims of First Baptist Church officiating. Bearers were Sherwood Baker Clyde Baker Forrest Baker Maurice Shea Merritt Shea and Edwin Spaulding. Burial was in Oak Grove.
Mrs H King Coolidge dies early Saturday in New York City. Survived by daughter Mrs Arthur Sewall 2nd of this city and son Phelps Warren of New York City. Funeral services and interment in Troy New York slated for Monday.
Two Bath men, Greene and Wagner, are honored for academic and military achievements. Greene, a Morse High School graduate and James Bowdoin Scholar, was a baseball letterman, Sigma Nu member, and ROTC cadet, commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps with two years active duty to start next February. He is married to Frances Norton of Bath. Wagner, economics major and Dean’s List student, also a Sigma Nu member, plans to join Great Northern Paper Company after graduation.
Miss Dorothy F. Robinson of Hartford Connecticut spent the weekend with her mother Mrs Bicel Robinson of Adams court. Her sister Miss Betty Robinson accompanied her and remained in Hartford for a week. Mr and Mrs Russell Merchant and daughter Nancy of Highland street have left for their Meadowbrook cottage to spend the summer.

Paul M. Hovey aged 43, assistant to the director of organization for the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Iron Shipbuilders and Helpers of America AFL-CIO, died suddenly Tuesday June 11 in Florida while traveling to Miami airport. As New England regional director, he led the Bath Iron Works campaign in 1950 that incorporated his AFL union and ended a decade of independent organizing.

Ham daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William F Ham former residents of 85 Pearl Street The Rev William D Chapman of St Pauls Church Brunswick officiated She died June 8 at Quincy Massachusetts after a lingering illness Born November 7 1898 in Bath Survivors include two brothers Theodore R of Belfast and James L of Quincy Massachusetts.
Leon F Bates 57 of West Bath and Beachmont died Sunday at Bath Memorial Hospital after a career as a carpenter. Born March 8 1900 in Beachmont Mass he was the son of Charles H Bates and Mattie S Bates. He leaves two sisters Mrs Small and Mrs Ralph H McNary a brother Charles H Bates and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Porcella Funeral Home Winthrop Ave Beachmont and interment followed at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park West Peabody.
Frederick L. King 61 of West Bath died Thursday at Bath Memorial Hospital after a two week illness. Born in Vinalhaven on July 9 1895 he was a longtime Hyde Windlass paint shop employee. Survived by widow Irene a son Arthur Bath four daughters Edith Travis Alice Arsenault Sadie Fields Ruth Travis two brothers Sherman King Charlestown Mass and two sisters Evelyn Wallace Charlestown Mass Sadie Leighton Framingham Mass.
