Bath joins nationwide Alert drill with mixed results
Bath police chief Frank L. Moriarty called Operation Alert a success as traffic halted for ten minutes and residents sheltered in doorways. An out of state car crossed the Carl ton bridge. A predistributed damage report noted explosions at Bath Iron Works with estimated casualties potentially over 400 and ongoing plant fire. State police and local responders were alerted while Iron Works operations continued. The mock incident proceeded with officials coordinating via a new CD telephone system. The real test remains to come.
