Bowdoin in Bath Sees Major Engine Upgrade for Polar Voyage
Lieutenant Commander Donald MacMillan visits Bath to inspect the Bowdoin as Hyde Windlass Co. replaces a 45 hp engine with a 60 hp four cylinder unit, adds seven crude oil tanks, and installs a Delco electric system with radio, lighting, and refrigeration. A Hyde Windlass feathering propeller, radio room, photographic dark room, and oxide batteries bolster the ship for a three month Arctic expedition under the National Geographic Society. The Bowdoin will sail with the Peary and three seaplanes, aiming to locate a possible unknown polar continent and plant the American flag if found.
