All city offices except the police department shut down from Saturday noon to Wednesday morning for a long weekend. Clerks and department heads enjoyed the break with some skeleton crews required. City employees receive an extra day at the May meeting. Schools closed Friday night and reopen Wednesday morning.
Leon J. Fortin of Walker Street spent the weekend in New York City visiting a hobby show. He traveled to the city to explore exhibits and participate in related events.

Troops prepare for Camp Hinds training and Thomas Point Camporee June 9 to 11 with detailed troop activities and leadership.
Troop 93 of Woolwich with 14 Scouts met at the cabin on Merrymeeting Bay. After volleyball they cooked supper by the fireplace. They planned the District Camporee at Thomas Point June 9 to 11 and a Troop Plan trip to Camp Hinds July 2 to 9 with part of the expense defrayed by the committee. All Scouts to return camp applications next meeting. Memorial Day services planned at Tanner Square Sagadahoc Ferry with a 1:30 p.m. gathering at Mr Doake’s house.
Peter Pan Brownies Troop 11 met Monday afternoon to recite the opening Brownie Promise. They were reminded to bring camp forms by Saturday and dues were collected. Lorra ine Cormier and Nancy Davis led the budget, seeds were planted in cans to take home, games were played, and the session closed with Good Night. Next meeting June 5 invites all mothers. leaders Mrs Ernest Sinclair, Mrs Thomas Aiken, and Mrs Ralph Card attended.
Blue Bird Brownies Troop 10 held a make believe radio talent program at Corliss Street Baptist Church. Led by Mrs. Zylphan Richardson, 21 girls attended with three visitors. The event included multiple musical numbers and skits, fund collections, and reminders for upcoming camp applications.
Alewives are entering Damariscotta Lake in record numbers. The run began days ago with large crowds of fish at the falls near the power station drawing dip nets. Town pools overflowed as boats and trucks moved fish to Rockport for processing and export to out of state plants.
Mr and Mrs Arthur M Packard of 17 Beacon Street and Mr and Mrs Dwight Packard and daughter Laurel Anne of Denny Road spent Memorial Day weekend at the Packards cottage on Webb Lake Weld They were joined there by Mr and Mrs Arthur Packard and family of Portsmouth NH.
Bobolink Brownies attended a Lambert Park gathering with Pine Tree Troop at the Community Building. Judith Comeau Donna Dorr and Susan Grevers earned Brownie wings and will be invested as Tenderfoot members June 5, as leaders and parents look on.
Sagadahoc Sheriff and Bath police probe a late Wednesday shooting that struck 16 year old Walter Trask in the face with birdshot. Trask and companion Dick Alley were walking near the Bath Water District standpipe when a gun fired. pellets hit Trask but did not penetrate skin. He was treated at Bath Memorial Hospital and released.
A 57 by 25 foot Lambert Park two family house floated 15 miles down the Kennebec River on a 110 by 32 foot scow to become a Summer cottage at Indian Point in Sagadahoc Bay. Freighted by Freeman Richardson of Gorham and towed by Mason Carter of Woolwich, the unit was moved in two stages with high tide guiding the final approach.

Miss Janet Lillian Freeman of Riverside Connecticut will graduate from Westbrook Junior College in Portland on June 4. She is the granddaughter of the late Josiah L Walker and Minnie H Walker of Woulwich and Roslindale Massachusetts.
The 61st Sagadahoc County Women's Christian Temperance Union gathered at the First Baptist church on May 25 with delegation from local and West Bowdoin unions. It opened with devotions by Rev. M A Gordon, reports were read, and Doris Thistle led the meeting. Wynnefred Shepard from Richmond gave the keynote speech. Officers elected include Doris Thistle president and Blanche Cobb vice president. A program of songs and recitations by Loyal Temperance Legions closed the event.
The Haskell Memorial School closed with a ceremony at Sev enth-day Adventist church. Miss Janice Pecci graduated from the eighth grade after attending all eight grades at the same school. The program featured four playlets, student acts, and investiture of Busy Bees, Sunbeams, Builders, Helping Hands and Friends groups by teacher and parent observers.
The Maine Department of Health and Welfare reports fifteen chickenpox and twelve German measles cases in Bath for the week ending May 20. German measles show rising incidence statewide, with a highly contagious virus causing mild illness in children and a rash appearing within 24 to 36 hours.
A Bathman pleaded guilty in Municipal Court on Wednesday and received six months probation from Judge Gardiner R. Deering after he vowed not to ask for probation again. The judge accepted his assurance as he had an opportunity to work.
Chief of Police Frank L. Moriarty announces a nationwide and local drive with the Institute of Makers of Explosives to warn youths about blasting caps. The program urges reporting found caps to police, stresses dangers, and notes caps enable dynamite use in mining road work and land clearance.
Winslow C. Miller of Rockland was fined 10 dollars and 4.70 dollars costs after pleading guilty in municipal court to possessing 546 undersized soft shell clams. Warden Swansea G. Burns filed the complaint. Miller claimed he was a truck driver for a Dark Harbor firm and had picked up the clams for transport after purchase, not as the buyer.
William S. Newell chairman of Bath Iron Works and former president of the company, sent a telegram from Tokyo to his family on Saturday after learning of matters tied to the United Seamen's Service, where he serves as president, and immediately flew to Japan.
The Huse P. T. A. met in the school auditorium Thursday evening to hear Leaders' conference reports from Augusta. New officers are Mrs. Stanley Woods president and Mrs. Gerard Billington vice president. other posts filled by Mrs. Thornton Percy, Mrs. Albert Trask, and Mrs. Frank Keinig with committees named for program hospitality membership benevolence and publicity. A banquet is planned for June 8 and two operettas will be staged June 2 at Huse School with tickets sold by pupils.
Frank Page of Frankfort was fined $10 and $4.70 costs for driving without a license by Court Recorder John W. Quarrington at Municipal Court. A companion also charged with intoxication received $10 plus $5.60 costs. State Trooper William Knox apprehended them last Friday in West Bath. each faces 15 days in Kenebec county jail if unpaid.
North Grammar School grade four pupils visited a 40 passenger Convair liner at Brunswick Airport on Thursday morning. A stewardess gave the tour and the trip was made possible through Bath Transportation.
