Government condemnation proceedings start to seize land for 400 homes at the North End in Hagan field. Engineers have reviewed the sites, sewers and water mains are being extended, and a large standpipe may be built of wood before reinforcement. The plan would raise Bath's population significantly. a schoolhouse proposal is dropped.
Mrs Stella Knowlton 70 died at the Kimball street crossing when the westbound Kennebec limited struck the car she rode in. Driver Nathan Fowler 70 and Miss Effie White 60 survived with injuries. State and local investigators, with witness cautions, noted failure to heed signals.
The Bath Finance Committee approved a 1750 city funded grant to continue the playground program for the rest of the year. The move aims to prevent closure due to funds strain and supports ongoing facilities for about 700 children across Goddards, Central Grammar, and Dike sites.
Miss Rita Brooks of Rumford will join Center Street School as junior primary teacher, replacing Mrs Hope Hersom who moves to the new John E L Huse elementary school. Brooks is Farmingdon Normal alumna with a third year degree and ten years teaching experience at Bethel and Northeast Harbor.
The Sabino community starts a busy season with an outdoor weinie roast and three social evenings. A large public gathering is planned and the annual meeting with election of officers is set for a date in March. Later the month will mark the 20th anniversary of the hall. Committee heads include President William R. Dean, Everett G. Lemont, former first president Charles Bates, and Mrs Thomas Aitkin.
Navy certified road upgrade will connect Route 1 with the Carlton Bridge using a 14 foot high reinforced concrete underpass spanning nearly 100 feet in width. The plan requires removing 17 residences along High and West Side streets and introduces a four lane surface road with traffic circles and ramp to Middle Street and the Carlton bridge. Construction waiting on steel, with work to start soon and some residents already notified to vacate.
Mayor Walter C. Rogers received a letter from Luther Hart of the Consumer's Counsel urging coal consumers to purchase and store next winter's supply. The campaign, backed by Civilian Defense and coal groups, warns peak railroad demand may hit by Sept. 15 and stresses coal’s critical role as oil declines.
Innovation by Superintendent Harlanda Ladd and the Bath Board of Education puts janitors on a 50 week basis to tackle repairs. Weeks Street school showcases repainting ceilings and desks, blackboards redone, and furniture refreshed. Cleanups extend to elementary schools citywide with plans to finish 15 rooms before year end. Mrs J Russell Grant of 26 Liberty street broke her wrist while visiting Old Orchard Beach.
Workers at Simonds Construction for Hyde Windlass plant feared a strike over pay scales. A three to four man exodus prompted foreman Charles Enman to discuss with the group. Confusion over Portland versus Augusta local rates prompted a 1.16 per hour decision with all returning to work. A meeting at Hotel Phoenix planned with Portland and Augusta delegates to settle the district question. Jack Allenbrand and Fred Summerton guests attended a niece’s wedding in Detroit before returning home.
Miss Lola Thissell of Auburn died Tuesday in Bath while staying as a guest of Mrs. Harry Ring Jr. at 25 Park Street. The notice records a local obit with names and residence.
The Bath Board of Education and Superintendent Harland A Ladd plan a new metal working department at Morse High School in a ground floor annex. The project includes 25 by 60 foot shop space with $1,000 plus of sheet metal machinery and ten lathes with drills shapers and small tools. An instructor is being sought to staff the two new courses as vocational training expands for local youths and defense prep at Bailey Evening School.
John J. Keegan Rent Director announced landlords must return registration statements to the local Bath Maine area rent office not the Office of Instructions. The forms clearly state return locally to avoid delays for landlords and tenants. Harry W. Moulton of 23 Russell Street is a patient at Bath Memorial Hospital.
Officials in the Defense Rental Area urge landlords in Sazadahoce and Lincoln counties to file mandatory rent registration forms by midnight August 15. Penalties include a $5000 fine or one year in prison for noncompliance. Forms available at Bath City Hall, banks, rent office, 194 Front Street. Open new Bath office at 194 Front Street and Summer Street with staff from Judge Keegan’s office.
At a four day Sagadahoc Superior Court session Judge Nathaniel Tompkins presided. The petition to determine the Old Bay Bridge road boundaries in East Brunswick was dismissed as commissioners had no Sagadahoc jurisdiction. A committee was appointed to view routes and report in October 1942. Several other cases proceeded including Ralph Haskell vs Leeman Place with a $246 judgment and a Libby vs Woolworth Co. injury suit pending.
Past Ladies club of Myrtle lodge held its regular monthly meeting at 54 Washington Street Monday night at 7 30. Hostesses were Mrs Nelson and Mrs Wallace Atwood. Cards were signed for sick members Mrs Fred Daley Mrs Melville Clark and Mrs Oliver. Next meeting planned for August at Mrs Warren Davis home in West Bath. Prizes awarded in bridge and Flinch to Mrs Seth Stewart Mrs John Hunt and to Mrs W W Chaney Mrs Howard Nash. Nine members attended.
The Republican County Committee plans a meeting at City Hall next Friday evening at 7 30 to discuss campaign plans. State Chairman Lloyd Morton and Mrs May Chapman will attend, with Governor Sewall hoped to join. Master Nora Clowes, 12, visiting from Bath, is in Hallowell with relatives before entering Morse High in September. Bessie Klolmes of Lynn, Mass., visiting cousins Frank and Mrs Moses on Corliss Street.
