A&P produce buyer Earl R French says half of annual $6.1 million spoilage from Maine fruits and vegetables can be saved by better grading packing and direct distribution. Efficient farm handling and distribution could boost production equivalent to 5 to 6 cents per unit without extra land labor or gear. French notes labor shortages and rising costs but cites 25.2 percent productivity gain over a decade and a rise in average people fed from 11.7 to 14.1 persons per farmer.

A Bath Iron Works welding department worker was held at police headquarters awaiting arraignment on an assault with a dangerous weapon charge. He was arrested after a shooting on Richardson Street where witnesses say he pursued his wife with a revolver. A broken revolver was found under the porch and a shell embedded in the living room floor. Three shots were fired. Police noted coincidental timing with a police committee session on potential shootings.

One Man Injured In Woolwich Auto Crash In Bath Area
One man was injured in an auto crash near Woolwich on Route One east of Bath Tuesday night. Elden Chase 33 of LaGrange Me is at Memorial Hospital with a back injury awaiting X ray and exam. Archie Dexter of Woolwich N H now living in Woolwich and employed at Bath Iron Works was arrested for reckless driving after his Packard six overturned after striking truck driven by Joseph Creamer Waldoboro. Sheriff Charles Messenger investigated the wreck.

Contractors begin building at the Hyde property on Western avenue leased by the Navy for dormitories.
