Bowman and Hodge duel shaped early Wiscasset lore
In 1803 a duel over a quarrel at Bowman’s house near Wiscasset led to a long court fight. Jonathan Bowman senior, judge and clerk, faced Capt. James Hodge after a horsewhip threat and alleged blows. The case wound through common pleas and supreme judicial courts, ending with Bowman awarded costs. The tale links local families, jurists, and the Kennebec region’s colonial era.
