Maine apple crop outlook promising as yields rise
State Horticulturist Stanley L. Painter calls Maine apple prospects very bright with an estimated 1,000,000 bushels this year, up 30 to 35 percent from 1941 and the best since the 1933-34 freeze. The gain reflects favorable growing conditions and a three year bearing of young stock from a long range planting program. State official E. L. Newdick notes 39,005 acres of seed potatoes entered for certification this year, up from 38,498 in 1941.
