Canal Barge Replaces Bast To Haul Coal On Kennebec
The Kennebec Journal reports the barge Bast is missing from the river, sank at Purington's wharf in Augusta, and has been pumped out and towed to Bath. The canal lighter Gaspe, about 750 tons, replaces Bast to haul coal from Kennebec Wharf & Coal Co. to Augusta's Purington wharf, with the Berwindglen delivering coal from Newport News. Barge master Jimmy Carr, a 47 year old veteran, notes the craft's handling behind the tug Seguin as it makes planned trips before winter ice.
