Hughes to open Maine campaign as GOP moves east
Charles E. Hughes plans a Maine kickoff before September’s election after a five week Western tour to the Pacific coast. Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft may campaign in Maine as Hughes focuses early effort in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. He will announce nomination in New York likely July 31 in a large hall with leaders from across the country and a possible public attendance. A Pacific coast trip follows the New York event, then an Eastern push through Maine, with a vacation in the Rockies. Lothair L. Lowell brought over two handsome heifers bought from Haskell of Wiscasset.

Dirigo the American steel sailing ship's voyage and capture
The Dirigo sailed from Seattle on October 25 bound for Kalmar Sweden under Captain W. M. Mallett. In early March a British patrol boat boarded her 1100 miles from Lerwick Shetland Islands and took her as a prize with armed guards to that port. Built in 1894 by Arthur Sewall & Co in Bath, she was the first steel sailing ship launched in the United States and left the Sewall fleet last October when sold to San Francisco interests.

Popham to Host Hotel Rockledge Resort Revival
Colonel C D Wainwright plans to revive Popham as a premier Maine coast resort with Hotel Rockledge and bungalows on the cliff property near Silver Lake. Engineer Corliss has begun preliminary surveys as work nears start. The site offers sea views, Kennebec shores, and wildflower shores. Silver Lake lies 150 feet above the beach with fresh water and a broad three mile beach. Also: A W Levine fell from a lighter into the river at Lynde's Island but survived after being rescued by a rope manned by D McKay. Levine was later rescued.
