Life of Herm Smith Ends in Casco Bay Pioneer Sailor and Builder Dies
Herman C. Smith of West Point dies after an operation ending a vivid life of adventure and work. Born 1863 in Stetin Germany, he sailed before age 13, served in the German Navy, escaped, and wandered through Africa and Asia before joining the American Navy. He settled in West Point 43 years ago, built a store and hall, raised 12 children, and became a leading local figure known for independence and sea‑craft.
