Von Huene Home Stands On Site Of Historic Preble Farm
The Von Huene family settled in Woolwich in 1952 on the Kennebec river site once owned by the Preble family and later the Trotts. The Prebles suffered a 1758 massacre during the French and Indian War, with Mary and five children killed or taken to Canada. Samuel and descendants managed the farm until 1854 when Alfred Pratt bought it. The current house, 150 years old, retains its exterior while interiors were refreshed by Alfred Trott and later by Mrs. von Huene and six helpers. They transformed the grounds with lawns, gardens, and a productive vegetable plot, keeping the charm of a historic homestead alive.
