Old Celebration of July Fourth in Bath 1840 Record
A Bath history clipping describes the 1840 Independence Day celebrations with a quiet social tone. The event featured a parade led by Levi P. Lemont, a Whig-leaning crowd favoring Harrison, a church ceremony with songs and a Fessenden oration, a dinner by A. W. Turner, toasts including John Tyler, and an evening fireworks display. Maine backed Harrison by 225 in the presidential vote.

Gigantic Maine Lobster Claw On Exhibit At The Times
The Times displays what may be the largest lobster claw seen locally. Weighing three pounds, the claw measures ten and one half inches long and about six inches wide. It was found by Woolwich driver Scott Tibbetts near Barters Island, suggesting a monster lobster of perhaps thirty pounds. A Bath schooner, the Samuel Dillaway, arrived in Portland with 513000 feet of southern pine for Wilson Lumber Co. The Dillaway, 17 days at sea, survived a near collision with the Lucia Porter after foggy seas.
