Bath officials convened to study the city’s charter and evolving administration. A proposed council-manager form is discussed while centennial plans face funding questions and public hearings on a $4,000 ceiling and a $10,000 transfer prompt further scrutiny.
T/4 Sgt. Floyd M. Elwell of Bath Maine in Nuremberg Germany serves as mess sergeant at the prison complex where German prisoners await trial. He reports meals for 176 men, oversees kitchen staff, and has seen many notable prisoners during guards duties. His career spans work at Bath Iron Works and Hotel Bowdoin, with Paris passes and a wish to attend cook school.
The March of Dimes ball in Bath features the Friday Chestras of Portland as the main entertainment with a floor show at 10:30 p.m. Tickets $1.50 each. table reservations $1 extra per person. Sponsors list grows as organizers urge ticket returns and support for a great cause.
A basement fire at North Primary School began from defective wiring and spread to the first floor. Firefighters used four hose streams and smoke masks to control the blaze, halting it by 12 30. The building had been condemned as unfit for school use after a 1910s inquiry, with plans to relocate pupils to other sites while reconstruction was debated.
The Republican City Committee met in City Hall and set February dates for ward and mayoral caucuses. A Feb 6 meeting preceded the Feb 12 mayoral caucus, with strong support expressed for Randall F. The Board of Aldermen and the Common Council authorize the Board of Education and the Joint Standing Committee on Schools to hire a structural engineer to estimate repair costs for the North Primary school damaged by fire. The survey cap is $100, with a report expected at the next regular meeting, pending State Department of Education approval.
