Montsweag Fire Destroys Enchanted Barn Area House

A Friday night blaze levelled the two and a half story Montsweag house linked to the Enchanted Barn tea room. The $10,000 loss was insured. Firefighters from Bath and local volunteers fought from 10 p m to 5 a m, saving nearby structures valued around $10,000. The blaze origin remained undetermined with March of 10 time relocation. The house belonged to Charles Henry Butler, owner of the Moatsweag Farm, located near Bath Rockland road. A Boston woman leased the Tea room for the summer and planned to arrive Saturday morning. The Enchanted Barn and adjacent barn were saved by Bath Engine 4, which stretched hose to a pond. Neighbors helped salvage rugs, mattresses, and chairs before smoke halted further entry. The fire was seen from Boothbay Harbor and sent sparks to nearby buildings. The main house collapsed at 2 30 a m. only shed and ell survived. The incident led to speculation about a tramp or passing train as possible causes, though no definite theory was established.
