Gas fumes ignite car fire near Hyde Windlass plant
Thomas H. Trainor of Bowdoin, formerly Bath, an oiler at Hyde Windlass Co., narrowly escaped injury when gasoline fumes exploded after he struck a match to start his car on Federal Street. A nearby upholstery in the front seat burned and the car top was damaged, with two chemical tanks from Engine 4 containing the blaze. Trainor had primed the motor with gasoline and placed the container in front of the auto where fumes built up. Also noted is a weekend visit by several relatives returning home from Kittery and Auburn to their grandparents on upper Washington Street.
