The Patten Free Library Association held its annual meeting Monday evening with 32 corporators present including Librarian Miss Margaret Foote. Judge James S. Lowell presided as secretary recalled the late president Galen C. Moses. Harold M. Lewis served as temporary chairman to fill the vacant chair.

Morse develops US shipping empire links Archangel route
Charles W. Morse head of Hudson Navigation aims to create a United States mercantile marine with 18 ships, 13 vessels already acquired for over 3 million dollars. Twelve ships will sail New York to Archangel with a thirteenth serving South American coastwise trade. The plan includes a holding company with separate subsidiaries named for each ship and controlled by one umbrella firm.

Men Serve Fine Stew at Gentlemen Night Grange Meeting
The Five Islands Grange held a Tuesday meeting conferring degrees on Ida M Harford and Orville Rowe with next week’s session to confer third and fourth degrees on five more candidates. Manfred Newdick funded the stew and James McMahan prepared it while the men served as waiters. A literary program followed and officers will be installed next Wednesday with state official BE Libby present. Capt Ira Lewis remains critically ill after grippe and paralysis.

Grace Church hosted a combined Knights Templar and Episcopal service for John W. Ballou. Flags halved across Bath as businesses closed for the hourlong funeral from two to three p m. Pallbearers and dignitaries from Maine and neighboring towns attended, led by Eminent Commander Fred H. Thompson and Prelate Henry R. White.

Obituary: John W. Ballou Dies in Bath Maine
John W. Ballou longtime Sagadahoc sheriff and Bath merchant died at his High Street home after a period of failing health. Born November 4 1832 in Newton Massachusetts he was son of John Ballou and Sarah Warren Ballou. His grandfather Gen Joseph Warren died at Bunker Hill. Ballou rose to prominence in Bath and Maine.

New England Shipyard Sold to Harod M Sewall
Hon. Harold M. Sewall purchased the New England Shipbuilding Co. yard on the Kennebec. Inspectors found the yard in good condition, especially the office building. Plans exist for vessel construction and talks of forming a steel shipyard company, with offers already received for half a vessel. The sale price was not disclosed.
