Albert S. Noyes announced the Fourth War Loan Drive in Region Eight will mirror last year with Carl Crane of Bath Savings and Ralph W. Bragg of Central Maine Power as city co chairs. Civilian Defense personnel will assist. Bath committee to meet soon to organize. Mrs. Lida Camp of Freeport visiting son and daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs L E Estabrooks in Bath.
Col William Tudor Gardiner, former Maine governor and ex Harvard football star, part of a risky mission to Rome during surrender negotiations. Disguised as American aviators, Gardiner and Brig. Gen. Maxwell Taylor entered Nazi held Rome to press Badoglio for formal surrender. Their actions helped prevent a German move to block the Rome- Berlin-Tokyo axis and saved American lives.
Mizpah class of First Baptist church met Tuesday evening led by Mrs George Carey Oak street. With vice president Mrs Franklin Chamberlain relocating to Tennessee, Mrs Harold J Carter was elected to complete the year. White Cross quota reportedly filled. Attendees included Mrs Jussellrant Kenneth Thayer Miss Jaanee Wright and others. The class will meet next Tuesday with Miss Eleanor Mills for a bi monthly Bible class conducted by Rev Charles R Sims.
Grace Church in Maine passed a constitutional amendment at an adjourned annual meeting designating the second Monday of January for annual meetings and implementing a rotating vestry system with 3 year terms. Elections and reports were read, with clergy note of members in military service and deaths.
Parents report lack of suitable clothing shoes and rubbers for young children. Merchants say it is hard to stock a wide range of sizes making attendance difficult for many students.
Over a 24 hour period from noon Wednesday to noon Thursday, 3 379 cars used the Carlton bridge over the Kennebec River at Bath. A traffic registering machine tallied peak car flow during shift changes at Bath Iron Works and noted heavy auto use by war workers and freights on the Maine Central Rail Road deck. The bridge, opened Nov 15 1927, was later made toll free by legislative action.
Capt. and Mrs. Rodney E. Ross Jr arrived to spend 12 days with his parents after their locked Hotel Statler car was robbed in Washington. Their bags and clothing were taken while police and the FBI search for Ross, who wed Mary Frances Cunningham of Gainesville in March.
At a January Cosmopolitan Club gathering Miss Esther Jaksey spoke on her work with churches and the USO and called for more youth recreation. The program included a white elephant sale and reports from officers, with plans for February and remarks on a Minute Man Banner war bond program.
The Bath Iron Works basketball team begins its season with a Thursday night game against the Coast Guard at Boothbay Harbor in the high school gym. All Iron Works players report to the YMCA at 6 30 Thursday night before the team departs.
Mrs Ralph EB Warren hosted a four to six tea at her home 912 Washington street. Guests included Mrs Joseph O Purdue Mrs John Parker Mrs John McInnes and Mrs Harry F Morin who were served by Mrs Edward True Miss Mary Morse and Miss Linna Mare Purdue.
Lieut. Arthur W. H. Rand and Lieut. Phillip A. Rand U S A I A F have returned to duty after leaves to their mother Mrs. Robert Tremain of Lynnfield Center Massachusetts Both are Bath nephews of Mrs Herbert Calderwood Their father Arthur W H Rand long served as bookkeeper at The Times Co Their leaves coincided and were deeply appreciated Reedied text preserves service details and family ties.
The Lionesses club will meet Thursday night at the Winter Street church ladies parlor at 6 80. The Auxiliary will serve supper, with Tonn 00d, Ss. Ernest Freeman, Mrs Ralph O Burden and Mrs Clifford B Smith in charge. Mrs John Sylvester and Mrs Morton Young assist in the dining room. Mrs Edgar D Leavitt chairs the program and the guest speaker is E H Robinson director of the local U S O.
Bath authorities arraigned Clarence Oliver and Sam King in municipal court on forgery charges linked to a four man ring that passed bad checks in Bath Lisbon Portland and nearby towns last November. King pled guilty and was bound over to January term with $500 bond. Oliver pleaded not guilty and bound over with $1000 bond.
