Fernald Seeks Republican Nomination in June Primary
Roy L. Fernald of Interport announces for governor in the June Republican primary opposing Horace Hildreth of Portland and Ardene Richardson of Strong. A lawyer with long Maine legislative service, Fernald was House member in 1930 and 1932, Senate member in 1934 and 1936, and Republican floor leader in 1937. He opposed the 1937 sales tax, the 1939 bond issue, and the 1941 gasoline tax hike, volunteered for Army service in 1940s, and has been active in the American Legion and airfield efforts at Winterport.

New Year's Eve Party at the Legion Hall in Bath
One of the jolliest Bath celebrations was the Roland Smith Post American Legion party where over 100 members, wives and friends enjoyed Clif Leeman's orchestra. At midnight the crowd sang Auld Lang Syne and toasted the New Year. The event, informal yet festive, featured doughnuts and hot coffee served by the auxiliary, with a committee led by Mrs. Edgar D. Leavitt. May 1944 bring peace and progress. Five North Yarmouth Academy students earned honor roll honors in the recent period: Edith Campbell, Dorothy Thompson, Patricia Maas, Charlotte Gray, and Mary Louise Pinkham.
