Rail highway crossings tied to public works push
Railway Age argues elim ination and protection of grade crossings should be a major public works priority. A railroad executive estimates removing five percent of crossings could cut hazards by half,需saving about fifty percent of accidents nationwide at an estimated cost of 500 million dollars to remove nearly 12 000 dangerous crossings. There are 237 000 crossings in the United States with 30 000 deemed extremely dangerous by highway engineers. Eliminating all crossings is seen as impossible, but targeting the most dangerous ones through grade separations and highway relocation could prevent countless accidents.
