Mouse caper at sheriff's office ends in broom clash

Deputies Aderton and Reynolds attempted to trap a local office mouse at the downtown sheriff's station. Brooms swung as the drawer was opened, both deputies striking each other while the mouse escaped. The men reported only minor injuries and no capture.

Pheasant Specimens Displayed in Webber Window

Five pheasants from Herbert Spinney’s collection are on display in Webber drug store window including English English-Mongolian hybrids and a rare Japanese golden breasted specimen. They may travel to Augusta for Maine sportsmen meeting of the State Fish and Game Association on January 14 at the State House. Government Expert A. H. Dinsmore will speak. Funeral for Edward C. Purington Held in Brunswick

The funeral of Edward Clarence Purington formerly of this city was held Monday afternoon in Brunswick from his Cumberland Street residence. Rev. William O. Ayer of Berean Baptist, assisted by Rev. C. Raymond Chappell of Elm Street Baptist conducted services. Pallbearers included William J. Frost, Arthur Langford, Stephen Litchfield, and T. Albert Fields. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.

School Board Minutes Report Teacher Appointment and Repairs

At the January School Board meeting Vice-President Hyde presided with members Mitchell Jackson Rowland Burke Horan and Hogan present. The Primary School Committee elected Miss Mary F Gay of West Kennebunk as second grade teacher at Dummer Street Primary School replacing Miss Margaret Metcalf who resigned. The fire escapes on the Old High School were to be finished that day by Blaisdell and Leeman at about 225 dollars. The roll of accounts was passed.

New Year River Flood Hits Wharves and Steamers

A New Year flood drove the river tide higher than the normal 11.5 feet, flooding wharves including Kimball Bros and lifting the steamer Virginia to Commercial St. A ministers’ meeting at the Y M C A featured Rev. E P Browne on Prayer Meeting Methods and a push to Go to church Sunday. The next Y M C A gathering is set for January 12 at 3 p.m with Dr. F O Erb of Portland presenting.

Bath police arrest escaped prisoner Couture on 6:15 train

Bath officers McFadden and Sonia arrested Joseph Couture after recognizing a scar and brown sweater on the 6:15 train. Sheriff Davis commended the Bath police for prompt action, holding Couture until Auburn sheriff arrived with him on the nine o'clock electric. Couture expressed regret for fleeing.
