New Year's Day marks the library's 47th anniversary since its 1890 opening. The Bath institution, founded by Galen C. Moses, grew from 4,308 volumes to 36,099 by 1937 with thousands of card holders and a long line of librarians and staff guiding its growth.
Sagadahoc County Jury Commissioners Fred H. Thompson and Joseph W. Randlette drew the traverse jurors for the January term of Sagadahoc Superior Court. Presiding is Justice Arthur Chapman. Jurors span Arrowsic to Woolwich, including Bath, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Georgetown, Phippsburg, Richmond, Topsham, West Bath, and Woolwich with named individuals noted.
Dr. Carl E. Blaisdell of Bangor accepts the chairmanship of the Bangor division for Tufts College Medical School’s 2 million building and endowment campaign. Pur iT Dr Emmet Tung Dr Hugh G cKay and Dr John J Pearson Jr The next Maine Tufts Medical alumni meeting is a luncheon at the Lafayette Hotel Portland on Thursday January 13 at 12 15.
Sagadahoc Pomona Grange held its December meeting with Merrymeeting Grange at Bowdoinham Hall. Officers were installed, a fifth degree class of eight was conferred, and a bountiful dinner followed. The census showed 91 present, with program items including songs, readings, discussions on advertising for farmers, and a humorous sketch. The next meeting is slated for West Bath Grange on January 26.
The first aluminum power tender of its kind will be built indoors at Bath Iron Works for Dr. Milliken of New York City to outfit his yacht Thistle. Designer W Starling Burgess and Aluminum Company of America staff prepare the tender using corrosion resisting alloy, with delivery expected in May.
Hon. Joseph W. Randlette of Richmond a former Sagadahoc county commissioner announced his candidacy for nomination at the June primary. He served as commissioner after being appointed to fill the Dain vacancy and won the unexpired term in 1934. Randlette seeks renomination amid support from Col. George M. Stinson and strong county-wide backing.
Bath ministers met at Grace church parish house to discuss an Easter Sunrise service in the park on Easter morning. A committee including Rev. Sims Thorburn and Dole was named to draft recommendations while the group also debated remarriage of divorced people. The next meeting is set for February 7 at Winter Street chapel. A separate incident reports Guy Stevens awoken by his dog as his fox hound died in a fire after breaking a window. a ceiling collapse occurred as he escaped with the dog.
Maine Governor Lewis O. Barrows announces his 1938 bid for a second two year term. He plans renomination at the June primaries while declining to comment on rival Roy L. Fernald’s entrance. Barrows resumes duties after a Tucson visit, begins circulating nomination papers, and recalls a busy first term with a special October session and a defeated sales tax measure.
The New Year’s Eve Memorial hospital benefit dance at the Arcade drew the largest turnout in years with nine Georgians from Lewiston providing music. Patrons included many out-of-town guests and students, raising over 250 dollars for hospital equipment under the leadership of Mrs. James A. Gillies Jr and a full committee of league members.
West Bath grange hall hosted a poultry meeting led by H. L. Richardson of Orono and County Agent C. L. Eastman of Lewiston. The program covered hatching dates Summer egg output fresh egg law and management factors to cut costs including operating capacity feed costs and related issues. Poultry outlook and summary material were presented.
The marriage of Miss Clarabell Quick to George Connard was solemnized New Year's Day at Grace church by Rev. Charles M. Tubbs. The ceremony featured elegant carnations and evergreen decorations, a Mary Stuart lace veil, and a bridal party in peacock blue and copper satin. After a reception at Sedgwick Hotel, the couple departed for a two‑month Mediterranean trip aboard the 8. Ex Ex. They will reside at 21 Andrews Road.
Easton Pennsylvania hosts a dinner party Friday night in honor of Miss Quick and Mr Connard. Guests include Mrs William Coe and Dr Avert Harden among a long list from Delaware to Minnesota. Mrs Browne entertained her contract club with a Cobb road luncheon.
