Daily improvement in smelt fishing at Whiskeag creek colony

Camp owners report a rapid rise in smelt fishing activity at Whiskeag creek with about 60 shanties across Bean Rock Steep Landing and the Middle Grounds and numbers climbing toward a hundred. Catches reach a dozen pounds at times though still below the best early season. Alvah K Ridley notes the season has been poor overall due to late fall freshets cutting saltwater ratio and flood tides, but recent nights show better fishing and stronger tides may boost results. Smelts fetch 18 cents a pound locally and up to 38 cents in Boston for larger shipments. New camps spread along the Cathance river Bowdoinham The Gut and near Arrowsic bridge with a smelt colony at Winnegance. Good ice conditions persist across grounds.
