Insects as Food in Antiquity and Today
The piece surveys insects as edible materials across cultures, noting 500000 species yet honey as a common product in modern diets. It cites biblical references, Greek and Roman practices, North African use, Chinese caterpillars, Madagascar cocoons, Australian night moths, Mexican water bugs, and European famine cases. It ends by comparing insect dishes to familiar foods like snails and frogs while discussing maritime freight costs and ship maintenance.
