The Richmond Sportsmen's Association held its annual officer election on Monday evening December 11. Elected were Frank Sherman president Albert Ring first vice president James Carr second vice president Wesley Abber secretary and Earl McFee treasurer. Refreshments followed the meeting.
A series of local society items from Augusta include installation plans for a three-year committee led by Myron Douglass in January, a literary program led by Lelia Douglass, and performances by the Thompson brothers. Also noted are hospital stays, church talks by Robert Corthell of Saugus, and several visits among residents. Community groups like Progressive, Riverview, Pine Tree, Sagadahoc, and Beulah Rebekah lodge held meetings, Christmas events, and banquets with children’s programs and gifts.
The First Baptist church hosts a Christmas service next Sunday evening featuring a White Gifts for the King program and a pageant titled At the Manger. More than 40 participants work on a pure white setting with artificial snow and silver, creating a reverent atmosphere for all attendees.
Lt. LeRoy V. Honsinger of the U S N spoke on naval establishment at the West Bath Grange after the Monday evening meeting. Carver's orchestra opened, Charles W Walsh led the program, 57 attended including seven visitors. Leon M Genthner and Edward Jenks plan the Christmas party. officers to be installed January 4.
Robin Hood Brownies chose to furnish a Christmas program at the Old Ladies Home. On Monday they sang carols and featured recitations and duets including The Night Before Christmas and Silent Night. Leader Mrs Bird A Shellenbarger and guest Stella Whittam are noted, with family connections at 38 Snow Park.

Mrs Joseph Higgins visited Bath with her sister Mrs Walter Cummings. Gus Collins of Boston allied with Alex Cunningham then Sherman Campbell at Littleriver. Mrs Lester Powers and daughter Ann visited Bath. Herbert Hunt moved to his father’s home in Topsham. Lela Campbell of Arrowsie called on friends in town. Byron Campbell of Seguinland attended the pictures in Bath. Burial of Mrs Mary Swett of Bath at Robinhood Cemetery. William A Todd drove to Bath. Augusta Rowe wintering in Bath visited Mrs Elizabeth Hunt in Topsham Center. School closed for two weeks. Eleanor Cunningham, Morse High School senior, holidays with parents. Harold J Brown and family from Kennebec Point drove to Bath.
Multiple tournaments under way at the Y M C A feature senior rotation pocket billiards with players paired for the first round. Notable matchups include Clarence Arsenault vs Henry Middleton and George Perry Jr. vs Leroy Lord, among others, with Clarence Atwood receiving a bye. Junior rotation matches list Frank Danforth versus John Lowery Jr and Clarence Gowen versus Donald Knight, with Charles Sullivan drawing a bye.
Day's Ferry school showcased a festive program placed by Miss Roberta B Hathorne teacher for a two week vacation. Students performed songs and plays such as Through a Christmas Garland A Christmas Wish At Christmas The Jolliest Night and The Elves and the Shoemaker with several pupils named. Miss Rinda Staples visiting from Needham Mass spent holidays with her family at 731 Washington Street.
Mr. and Mrs. J Edward Burnham marked their 50th wedding anniversary Dec 19 at their Leonard court home. Original marriage occurred Dec 19 1886 at First Baptist Church Elm Street. Mrs Burnham daughter of Alburtis and Mary Jardene MacElman. born on Prince Edward Island. Mr Burnham longshoreman and shipyard worker. both enjoy autos and gardening with Mrs Burnham sewing and quilting hobbies.
Emma B. Sylvester 82 widow of Charles Sylvester of Phippsburg died suddenly Tuesday night of a heart attack at the home of cousin A. Mel cher Graves in Rochester New Hampshire where she visited over the holiday. Funeral Thursday at 11 at the Arthur F Mayo funeral residence in Bath. Burial will be in Bowdoin.
Friends of Edith Lilly Barrett of 22 Madison Avenue Port Chester New York report the deaths of her husband Charles Barrett and their 12 year old son Charles. The father died after a stroke and the boy drowned while skating. Mrs Barrett is with her brother George Lilly in Springfield Massachusetts. She is a daughter of the late Winship Lilly of Woolwich and was active in music circles. Barrett was a Christian Science reader in Portland. They moved to Port Chester 13 years ago.
Olive E Walker aged 14, granddaughter of Mr and Mrs James Jones of Bath, died Sunday at C M G hospital Lewiston after a two week illness and a mastoid operation. daughter of David B and Ellen Allen Walker of Haskell's Corner Auburn, survived by sister and brother. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 in Dillingham memorial chapel and burial in Evergreen cemetery Auburn.
Word has been received of the death in Boston on Sunday of Harriet Kidder Stewart Lawrence of 3 Copeland street Roxbury Mass widow of Chester R Lawrence. She was known in Bath where she spent her childhood and visited summers at Middle and Pine streets. The funeral was Wednesday at 2 PM at Dudley Street Baptist church Roxbury.
The funeral of Hugh McKay who died last Wednesday in a Savannah Georgia marine hospital was held Sunday at 2 pm at Arthur F Mayo funeral residence 819 High Street. Dr David L Wilson of Central church officiated with bearers Donald and Lawrence Specht Alonzo Thayer and Just Wold. Burial followed at Oak Grove.
The funeral of Mrs Henrietta Potter widow of Walter B Potter was held Wednesday afternoon at two at her home 164 High Street. Rev Frederick P Moffatt of Corliss Street church officiated with bearers John Clark Clyde Lake Wallace Reed and Robert Small. Burial followed at Oak Grove.
Funeral services for James H. Southard of 48 York Street were held Monday at 2 PM at Arthur F Mayo funeral residence 819 High Street. Rev Charles R Sims of First Baptist Church officiated with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery Brunswick.
Levi W. Powers of Georgetown died in Augusta Sunday and was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon at Georgetown Center church with Rev. Walter Schoepfer officiating. Bearers were William A. Todd Howard Heald Herbert Reynolds and Karcher Jackson. Burial followed in Oak Cemetery.
Five Islands residents H B Cranshaw and Quincy Wales from Newton Mass visit Five Islands on Tuesday to assess fire damage from December 13. People from Bath and nearby towns attend Christmas activities, gift distribution at the church, and local shopping scene. A Sunday storm brought a gale with fallen trees and heavy rain, followed by a clear evening and visible ocean roar.
Grace Church choir members and spouses attended a Christmas party hosted by Mrs. Arthur Sewall 2d on Washington Street. The event featured a 6 30 rehearsal led by George D. Field, a 7 30 supper, carol singing, a white Christmas tree with candles, and gifts of sewing cases and cigarette lighters for ladies and gentlemen, followed by candy-filled favors.
A burned out transformer caused a power outage in Brunswick Monday evening. Street lights, traffic lights, Christmas illuminations, and cash registers failed as Bowdoin College and local shops waited for power. A new transformer was installed and power restored by 8:25 PM, ending the outage by nine. Candles and oil lamps were in demand during the blackout.
Levi W Powers 62 a Robinhood resident and noted herring fisherman died in Augusta. He operated up to ten weirs in Sheepscot and Sasanoa rivers with heavy shipments to wholesale markets. Survived by three sons Carroll Lester Walter and three daughters Everett Stevens Alvah Reynolds and John Williams plus brother Burnside Powers. A Seaside lodge Masons member.
Mrs Henrietta Potter 64 widow of Walter B Potter died Monday at her Bath home after a brief pneumonia illness. Born in St John New Brunswick she lived in Bath since age 12. She was a Corliss Street church and D A R Colonel Dummer Sewall chapter member. Survived by son Homer M Potter Bath three daughters Mrs Samuel Dowds Montclair N J Mrs Rodney Upham Bath and Miss Henrietta Potter Bath three sisters Mrs Silas Furbish Philadelphia Mrs Charles H Harrington Bath Mrs Harry B Williams Bath.
Mrs Laura Ann Haskell of Deer Isle died Saturday night at the home of her daughter Mrs Benjamin Oliver at 1151 High Street where she had stayed seven weeks. She leaves three daughters Mrs Clara Ott Mrs Lottie Brown and Miss Martha Haskell five grandsons and three granddaughters. Funeral was held Tuesday at two at her Deer Isle home.
Funeral services were held Monday for Mrs Grace Pillsbury Parker of Belfast. Rev David L Wilson pastor conducted the service. Mrs Parker was the wife of Frank Parker a State Bank examiner and died Friday afternoon from a cerebral hemorrhage at her Belfast home.
Hugh M Kay aged about sixty from Bath dies Wednesday morning in a Savannah marine hospital after illness aboard a coastal passenger steamship. He had long service in the Bangor division of Eastern Steamship Lines and later worked as second steward on Boston run vessels. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 pm at the Arthur F Mayo funeral residence in Bath. He leaves five sisters and one brother, all in Bath.
James H. Southard of 48 York Street died Friday afternoon at Memorial Hospital from pneumonia following a fall from a staging six years earlier. Born in Harpswell, he lived in Bath over 40 years, married Emma Peterson in 1906, worked as a painter and at Bath Iron Works during the war, and later in trucking. He leaves his wife, a daughter from a previous marriage, seven grandchildren, great grandchildren, three brothers, two nieces, and three nephews.
Morrell Smith 26 of 8 Maple Street died Monday forenoon at Memorial hospital after an acute illness. Born in Bath, he was a son of Grover and Alice Green Smith and lived here all his life. He worked in the timekeeper’s office at Bath Iron Works Corp. Survived by wife Helen Talbot, son Morrell Smith Jr., his parents, three brothers Langdon Graydon and Grover Smith Jr. all of Bath, and sister Mrs Mildred Weed of Bath.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Haskell and son Carl of Meadow Way will spend the Christmas holiday with their respective parents Mr and Mrs Harry Pierpont and Mr and Mrs Manley Haskell in Augusta.
