The Bath Iron Works Athletic and Recreation association held a meeting to elect officers for the year. Martin Powers was named president, Joseph Doyle vice president, Arthur Colby treasurer, Walter Lyden secretary, Archibald M. Main executive vice president, and Henry O. Trowbridge honorary advisor. J. Donald Brennan became active director. Independent Brotherhood representatives were Frank Lehane, D. Casey, and Donald Stewart. Edward C. Morton SK 2-c Seabees returned to Camp Peary after his first furlough and met his two month old son Edward Jr. for the first time, saying “Boy, he’s a pip.” Morton, formerly at Bath Iron Works, is now on duty in the occupational office.

Sgt. Stewart H. Day Jr. is missing in action after the United States Army Flying Fortress Mary Pat was shot down over France on December 2 during a major raid toward Berlin. Day, a tail gunner, had previously earned an Air Medal and participated in the Regensburg shuttle mission. he studied at Morse High, worked at Bath Iron Works, and his brother Philip serves at Fort Eustis.

Destroyer Meredith Launches Tuesday
A small crowd braved cold winds to watch the Bath Iron Works launch of the destroyer Meredith from the north walls. The vessel is named for Sgt. Genesta Chapter O E S met Friday with a large gathering and guests. Mrs. Evelyn Morse praised members for yearlong support and attendance, announcing a Masonic Night on December 27 at the Masonic Temple for all Masons and their ladies. A Christmas tree party followed with a skit by Santa and Mrs Santa, gifts from the tree, and refreshments. A memorial for Mrs. Mary Young was observed.
