Miss Betty Noftall daughter of Mr and Mrs James I Noftall of 15 Forrest Road arrived Wednesday to pass the vacation. She is a junior at Gor ham State Teachers College.
Lou Mason of New York renowned for stage and radio wit entertained Bath area attendees at Beth Israel synagogue. The program, sponsored by B nai B rith Northeastern New England Council, featured Mason’s one man show with remarks by local officers and a post program reception. Out-of-town guests from Rockland joined in the event and hopes were voiced for future appearances.
A group of 20 young people including a brass quartet from Corliss Street church serenaded sick and shut-ins in the South End Sunday evening with familiar Christmas carols. In five cars provided by parishioners they visited 16 places including the Old Folks Home and Hyde Memorial Home. Upon return they were welcomed with refreshments by Free Will Workers committee members Mrs Mildred Walker Mrs Grace Block and Mrs Lillian Plant.
City clerk records show local licenses across hunting fishing and combo categories rose in 1949. A total of 1545 licenses sold, up from 1278 in 1948, with hunting licenses at 855 vs 733, fishing licenses 466 vs 365, and combination licenses 224 vs 180.

An onlooker on York Street reports a fire on Thursday afternoon where a fireman on a roof lost a pocketbook containing over $100. It slid from the edge and spread its contents, later recovered in the yard mud with only a single quarter missing.
Oak Grove cemetery suffered weekend vandalism with three gravestones overturned and another moved onto a pile. Walter E. Millett, superintendent of the Cemetery department, reported the damage occurred on a single lot.
Five year old Dean Murray was struck by a taxi driven by Hadley Smith on Washington Street near the Splendid restaurant. He suffered a forehead bump and remained in hospital overnight at the request of his attending doctor as police investigated.
The city plans to reopen Center Street School this fall to provide needed classroom space. Projections show several grade levels will require additional rooms as students advance, with four extra rooms needed at minimum and potential adjustments possibly reducing this to three, though no reduction below one room is certain.

The formal Christmas dances for Mrs. Leonard Etherbee’s classes were held in four parts at the dancing hall on Thursday afternoon and evening. Karl Small son of Mr and Mrs Hollis Small of 20 Meadow Way hosted a group of his young friends at his home Sunday afternoon for his third birthday. The afternoon featured games gifts and Christmas and birthday decorations. Guests included Danny Corliss Danny Sharkey Nan Akeley John Fogg Pokie Belanger Allen Loeschner Candy Lee and Carl Fogg.
City schools close Thursday afternoon for the Christmas vacation and will reopen on January 3. The Bailey Evening school closed last Wednesday night and will reopen Monday night, January 2.
Bath Iron Works will close Monday December 26 and Monday January 2 for Christmas and New Year holidays. Mrs. Paul Hurd of West Bath underwent an emergency appendectomy at Memorial Hospital last Wednesday.
