Readers are invited to contribute to the farm and grange section. Contributions of farm and country news should be sent to the Independent Office in Bath. Dealers report produce has been coming along slowly this week.
The Maine State Grange plans its Lewiston session in December 1923 amid debate on enforcing prohibitory laws. Honorary leaders and Capital Grange leaders back recall proposals and stricter temperance enforcement as Stetson signals possible re election but insists he will serve if asked. The report notes weather and market details for farmers including eggs potatoes apples cabbage and beef, with potions of local trade and prices.
Pupils of Miss Nellie Healley at Berry's Mill District school gave a well received Christmas program ending with a tree and Santa. Florence Neiley led the Trufant's Crossing program with many readings, songs and solos and a Santa scene. West Bath residents hosted surprise parties, farm work continued as weather allowed, and local residents attended gatherings in Bath and Topsham. New officers were elected for West Bath Grange and a Bath Supreme Judicial Court term jurors list was announced.
The Merrymeeting Grange met last evening with strong attendance. The lecturing program included music led by a pianist, a Seed Improvement report, discussion on program books and their future value, reading of When Father Has the Grip, a talk on verbal nominations for office, and a tableau by Brothers L P Temple and a sister.
A vintage advertisement offers a 100 dollar reward for an incurable catarrh case cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. It asserts the product works internally on blood and mucous surfaces, with endorsements from Walding Kinnan Marvin wholesale druggists in Toledo Ohio. Price is 75 cents per bottle and family pills are recommended for constipation.
At the annual meeting in New York last week twenty-four new directors were chosen, expanding the Equitable Life Assurance Society board to fifty two. The roster includes C B Alexander E W Bloomingdale John D Kernan Joy Morton Ludwig Nissen William Paine Tom Randolph Gage Tarbell and many other prominent bankers lawyers and merchants from New York Chicago Philadelphia Boston and other cities. The Maine attendee was F H Hazelton of Portland.
Granges in the section are urged to send their programs and news to the Independent. The weekly print depends on lecturer contributions. Holiday mail rush begins at post and express offices as long distance packages surge this week.
