Can Force Plants to Bloom Out of Season

The article reports on experiments showing that plant blooming can be controlled by daylight length. Dahlias, African marigolds, poinsettias, Klondyke cosmos and other chrysanthemums bloom earlier or later when daylight duration is adjusted. Techniques include covering plants or placing them in a cellar to simulate autumn days, while extending short autumn and winter days with electric lights can prevent blooming on their normal schedule. Different plant parts can even be forced to bloom in different seasons.
