Captain Jacob Smith writes from Shizuoka Japan in November 1945 describing delayed occupation duties, insufficient winter clothing and heating, and crowded harbors with idle ships. He notes widespread homelessness from bombing, friendly Japanese civilians curious about Americans, and a cautious hope of returning home. The letter reflects a medic’s view of postwar conditions and daily life for U S troops.
