Parallel With Communism in Federal Power Debate

It claims federal plants distort markets by borrowing like private firms while harming taxpaying competitors, likening expansionist policy to communism and warning against public power advantaging government over private enterprise.

Eyes on hospital plan sparks wary congressional hearing
The House Ways and Means Committee reviewed a bill to cover hospital, surgical, and nursing home care for Social Security recipients. Health Secretary Arthur Flemming warned it would undermine private health insurance, cost about 1.12 billion dollars next year, and push toward socialized medicine. He urged waiting for a government study on viable old age health options. Medical experts warned the bill would worsen care and expand government wards. The measure likely will return next session, demanding vigilant public scrutiny.

Advertising budgets and car sales clash in 1958
Editor & Publisher highlights a stark contrast in automaker advertising. American Motors boosted Rambler sales 80 percent while spending over two thirds of a 6 million budget in newspapers and nothing on TV, unlike rivals heavy on TV for ads. Critics argue the year was exceptional but the pattern links TV spend with lower sales.
