Can Legislator Serve As Judge Probate Court
Augusta Governor Cross asked the Attorney General for an opinion on whether a Legislator can be appointed Cumberland county judge of probate. Three candidates surfaced, including Senate President Nathaniel Haskell, who may be considered for the unexpired term of Carroll Chaplin. The issue hinges on constitutional provisions about legislators holding elective offices and salary raises. Cross planned to decide soon and travels included a visit to Manchester to review National Guard training and Lewiston for the Maine Three-Quarter Century club meeting.
